Sounds like Mammoth 1 has been postponed again due to manufacturer supply constraints. Canyon is still 2023 and D-Line.
LikeLike
Everyone is booked solid for next year so its really unlikely that either manufacturer could handle another big 6-pack like Chair 1 but I also think that the main lodge rebuild is making them think twice about where to put it.
For context, Mammoth is planning a huge rebuild of the Main Lodge area, including:
– Tearing down the existing main lodge and replacing it (its really old…)
– Building a new village behind Main Lodge
– Rerouting the main road around said village (it goes right between bottom of 1 and bottom gondola)
– Replacing Gondola 1&2
– Building a separate ops building and employee parking around the bend.
Its a huge long-term plan for the area and I think that until all the permits are done and on the books they don’t want to sink money into replacing their primary out-of-base lift at Main until they are sure they won’t get it yanked at the last minute a-la-park city. I know there’s a land swap with the forest service over this but don’t know where that’s at. Mammoth also had some teeth-gnashing about Chair 16 because the new alignment impacts some white bark pine trees (which are endangered now) and that took a while to get cleared which is why only limited prep work for 16 was done this year.
Chair 16 is super important too because its the main lift out of Canyon Lodge but Canyon doesn’t usually open until just before the holidays so it has a little more wiggle room for delays , but a new chair 1 HAS to be ready by October to open the mountain on-time.
Both lifts are Doppel-Yans and they both 10-60 all the time but I guess they’d rather put up with Chair 1’s problems for a few more years than risk getting construction delayed for whatever reason(s) in 2023.
Granted not an apples-to-apples comparison since Mammoth is exclusively on USFS land and Park City isn’t but until the Main Lodge plans are fully fleshed-out they’re wary of being tied up in permitting on short notice.
LikeLike
This is well said, and I think likely very accurate. I’d add that even if/when Chair 1 goes down, you still have the gondola and Ch 6 to provide a decent measure of capacity on roughly the same line. No such option for Ch 16 unless you want to do the Ch 17>4 two-step. The focus on the Main Lodge Village is also likely why things have gone really quiet on the plans centered around Eagle, including a new lodge and two-stage gondola from the top of 15 up towards Dave’s. That was always going to take a while to play out, but it has most certainly moved to the back of the line until the Main Lodge investment is well underway.
LikeLike
Yeah eagle lodge’s “upgrades” have been kicked down the road for 20+ years at this point so I doubt that’s happening anytime soon, we’re stuck with the igloos until Main is fully rebuilt. 15 can get pretty backed up because its the only lift up from there, but I think the master plan had ideas for another lift out of eagle to get you to 25 or a trail back to canyon?
I would LOVE to see an eagle-to-summit gondola someday because it would make lapping Mammoths full 3000+ ft vertical a snap but that would probably add too much congestion to Eagle and beginners would have nowhere to go at the summit except for Roadrunner, which already gets crowded since its a skinny cat track. Midstation at top of 10 could work though since beginners can get off there and there’s mellower trail options from there.
LikeLike
@MammothBOT98 I don’t think I’ve seen any plans with that second lift out of Eagle that went above Lake Mary Rd, so no ability to access Canyon from there. Wouldn’t be a bad idea in that it would relieve crowding and provide redundancy if 15 ever goes down. If I were them, I’d actually put a gondola starting there (not at the top of 15 where the master plan had it) and make it a two-stager with the second stage terminating at the top of 10. This would help get people out in the morning and you don’t really need a chair that badly b/c 15 isn’t a great lapping lift, particularly if they put in that dedicated beginner area in the plan (though that should extend to the base of current 25 and not just halfway like in the plan). It would also provide direct access to 5, 2, and 10, effectively enabling access to the whole mountain with 1 or 2 lift rides. Certainly no need to run it up to the summit and put more beginners in peril. Then you could move that 6 pack to somewhere it’s needed more – 1, 2, or 10 come to mind. Perhaps the new 25 alignment (per master plan) running from base of 9 to current summit terminal.

That’s such a shame Canyon is going ahead while Broadway is on hold. If they could only complete one for next year, I would have it be Broadway due to its heavier usage, especially during low snow years.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Nah, 16 is much more important. It’s the main out-of-base lift for Canyon Lodge, which is in turn the busiest lodge (it’s the starting point for about half of all the mountain’s skiers when it’s open). It’s also the only out-of-base lift at Canyon that provides direct access to chairs 2 and 10, which are the workhorses for moving across the mountain. It needs a lot more capacity than 1 does in the short term.
LikeLike
Hard agree. And don’t forget direct access to 5 as well, which is a popular lift in its own right.
LikeLike
Also gets you to 22 with a longer more fun run than via 8, and directly to chair 4/south park which is probably the most popular park at Mammoth mid-season. And 15 & 9, albeit via a long cat track.
Other lifts or even potential alignments couldn’t really do the same, other than a lift from Canyon directly to Lincoln peak. Which no one wants to see. 22 is an appropriate “skill check.”

Vail holds a lot of responsibility for the situation. By ordering 21 lifts for 2022 out of nowhere and filling up the available slots, many of the resorts who wanted lifts in 2022 were forced to wait until 2023. Seeing the 2023 backlog starting to fill then caused other resorts who were contemplating future projects to go ahead and reserve a 2023 lift. Now, 2023 is filled and resorts who wanted lifts in 2023 are reserving them for 2024. It will take an economic hit to the industry to break this cycle at this point.

I believe a while ago I found an image of the lift prior to its removal. The suspected lift was at a defunct ski area in Ontario. What stumped me was the fact that the lift appeared to be neither an alpha nor a delta. If I can find the image, I will add it to this page.

I agree, I think it’s probably a prototype version of the Delta. The double at Saskadena Six, VT has a similar-looking terminal:

It appears to be a hybrid of the Delta with the tension rails of an Alpha. My Delta (1981) has the motor room mounted on a pair of 20-metre I-beams, and the hold-down portal assemblies hung from the same. All move as one unit. These examples appear to have the motor room enclosure rolling separately on a pair of fixed carriage rails, and the hold-down assemblies don’t seem to move with the motor room.

There is also a chance that it would be a prototype to the Alpha, due to the age of the lift (the website I got the image from says 1983, so 40 years old). Does anyone know what year was the Delta discontinued???

Idk what year it was discontinued, but Crested Butte has two 1983 Deltas (Gold Link/Painter Boy)

1983 was the last year for the Delta. Three Alpha prototypes were also built during that year; two of them have been relocated but they are all still operating. They looked a lot different from the photo of the lift from Ontario, which I now think is a variation of the Delta model.

My guess is they have a lift and the timing to get it up and running depends on weather and employees. There’s lots of snow at that altitude and they’d have to wait for it to go away, then the steepness and lack of roads would require extra time and energy to get the lift line cleared and ready for lift placement. I’m guessing due to weather it be hard to schedule the actual start/end dates.

Eventually, lifts 2 and 8, are getting replaced in the near future possibly in between 2024 and 2034 with a base to base gondola (that’s what I heard). Sad to se 2, 4, and 8 chairs getting replaced. I am a fan of Poma falcon quad chairs.

Regarding Peter’s tweet that Alterra wanted to build 4 additional lifts in Summer 2023. Curious what people think of that list?

Okay I’ll venture a guess.
– Rex at Crystal
– Broadway at Mammoth
– Heaven’s Gate at Sugarbush
– Tamarack at Stratton

Tamarack is on the horizon, but it is unlikely Alterra would have built it this year regardless of the supply chain situation. The Liftline Lodge replacement project has yet to be finalized, and the developer will want a say in whether the lift comes across the road or not. Plus, longtime Stratton head Bill Nupp is retiring and they are focusing on the transition this summer.

My counterparts at Crystal were pretty sure they’d be replacing chair 10 this summer, but that seems to have been postponed and, in addition, Peter’s spreadsheet has it happening in ’24. Two independent sources say it ain’t happening this year.

A major player in the lift construction world is the fact that a very small percentage of ski areas build their own lifts anymore.
I am guessing 75% less than in 2000. At least here in the far west.
It would be interesting to know how many of the 2023 lifts are being installed by the Lift Manufacturer / Sub Contractor, compared to in house by the ski area??

Sounds like Mammoth/Alterra are building new 16 themselves because the manufacturer doesn’t have the capacity at the moment. Not sure about anyone else.

Dave had set the precedent of building lifts in-house as much as possible, granted we haven’t built any lifts in 10 years but I think the supplier struggles of last build season only reinforced the decision to keep it that way. Pretty cool that they’re gonna pull this off with a D-Line.

mammothbot98- Alterra tapped a very experienced construction manager to help out with this project; he happened to work at Doppelmayr for a long time. I imagine he should be fine. From a construction standpoint there’s really no difference in building a D-line versus anything else. Follow the assembly manual, get all your ducks in a row on the civil side, and so forth. It’s a big project but not beyond the scope of a good crew.

This year, the number of operating six packs in North America should exceed 100. If you include the seven chondolas with six-person chairs, we surpassed 100 last year. The past two years alone will have seen 27 built. The first went in at Boyne in 1991, and there was a decent gap before they caught on elsewhere. To date, it looks like not a single detachable six pack has been removed in North America, though many have replaced the earliest generation of high speed quads. For comparison, as of last year, there were somewhere over 600 double chairs in operation and over 400 high speed quads.
