I got the line machinery off Cecret, the sheave trains of which live on at Discovery Basin.
To my knowledge everything but the APU, grips, and sheave trains (which was the package I picked up) was scrapped, and the chairs were sold to the community.
Are there any photos of any of the late model Yan lifts at Alta with the original Yan line equipment and chairs? What year were the modifications done?
The sheaves on late model Yan lifts were prone to cracking and have largely been replaced just about everywhere. Sugarloaf probably got the CTEC line equipment when it was relocated to Supreme. Not sure where it’s going to end up now, but I’m pretty sure it will be relocated eventually.
I found 2 pictures of what I believe is the old Germania Yan triple. I’ve seen this Yan chair design as a quad before (Sunday River), but I never knew they made a triple version as well.
Alta received approval to build a Grizzly Gulch lift and Mount Baldy tram in recent years. Save Our Canyons was furious, and there have been rumors that one of the two will be canceled (likely the Mount Baldy tram) to please the organization in exchange for supporting the other project.
Yea because grizzly gulch is the one Alta wants the most and there is already enough skiers hiking up to the top of my baldy. Plus grizzly gulch would be a huge step for the one wasatch interconnect.
I know Alta has a list of higher priorities, but if they ever wanted their own version of Mineral Basin, Dry Fork has some great terrain and is already accessible from Supreme. Although I am sure Save Our Canyons would not be too pleased…
Leave it to Alta to replace a center pole Hall double with a center pole Yan double after only 11 years. Hall was around during 1978 and they could have easily bumped the capacity to 1200 pph with a few infill towers and more chairs. Definitely cheaper than buying an entirely new lift.
There was a former Sunnyside double chair when I skied Alta in 1990. I think I saw the installation year as 1970. It may have been a Hall, it was definitely not Yan but chairs had the center bar. This was replaced by the HST in 1999. Not sure if there was a prior version of Albion, the first one may have been the current version being removed this summer installed in 1976? Maybe someone who frequents Alta knows more specific details…
Maybe Neversweat and old Sunnyside were one in the same…? Lift type and installation and removal dates match, maybe name of old double chair changed to Sunnyside prior to 1990
Neversweet was the original name to Sunnyside or it was the other way around as for Albion from what I gather the original was heron (the tower tubes tell the story) and from what I can put together it went to park west to become arrowhead
For anyone who is curious with the Albion and Sunnyside replacement they are keeping Albion until Sunnyside is completed just in case the lift is not complete come ski season. It’s smart idea. If I had to guess and that Sunnyside is completed on time they will probably remove the chairs and haul rope.
Also what happened to Alta’s “if you want high speed lifts go somewhere else”?
What do you think on Cecret and Supreme do you guy think they will sell?

Supreme yes, Cecret doubtful. Supreme was heavily upgrade a few years back. I wouldn’t be surprised if Alta relocates it to replace Wildcat.

I had to be back at work in JH today so I only had time for Snowbasin this time. I will get to Alta as soon as I can – I hear the bend is epic.

The original Albion double appears to be Heron from the links you provided. I would like to post the link, but it probably won’t let me.

I didn’t either.

SkiLift.org has 1226 vertical, 4298 inclined ft for wildcat – the listed numbers on the current spreadsheet seem to be a bit off.

Actually I think they are just swapped with those listed for Albion

Both germania and the original wildcat were both built by heron and had top tension and bottom drive

Am I missing something or are half of the chairs here missing safety bars?

No. Half of them have comfort bars. The other half don’t. Nothing missing that I’m aware of.

They grew up. And the mountains got a LOT more crowded.

I mean, Sunnyside has been high-speed since 1999 and Sugarloaf went high-speed in 2001, so that hasn’t been the case for 22 years.
