I actually wrote a letter to the editor that was published in the North Tahoe Bonanza when I was in elementary school (’01 or ’02 probably) lamenting the 10+ minute ride time of the old fixed grip Crystal and petitioned for a detachable replacement- I’m sure this was already in the works, but I got my wish shortly thereafter! This chair serves some of my all-time favorite terrain anywhere.

This one of very few detachables in North America that require riding a fixed grip first to get to. Two others are Liberator at Mission Ridge and Homewood Express at Homewood.

Imperial at Breck and Jordan Bowl at Sunday River are a few more.

Jordan you can get to if you are staying in their hotel so that doesn’t count. The first year it was open it did count though.

Both detachable at Red Lodge Mtn, MT as well.

Don’t forget June Mountain, which has two Yan detachables accessible only by a Riblet double.

here is another example: the Couloir Express quad detachable at White Pass requires riding the Basin Quad, a non detachable.

It’s all about residual ridership where detachables are placed. It doesn’t make sense to make a lift a detachable if its only going to be ridden once by you for the majority of the day unless it’s super long and a workhorse.

The Imperial Express SuperChair and Kensho SuperChair also are on that list.

Imperial was mentioned before. Kensho is not in this boat. You can get to it from Independance SuperChair via Wanderlust (don’t quite me, it looks like it from the trail map tho).

The Wanderlust catwalk is not really well marked (its starting point is hidden by Pioneer Crossing), so Zendo is the primary way to reach the Kensho SuperChair.

There is also Jupiter express at Stevens Pass in Washington. You need to take double diamond ore the mill, both fixed grip triples

I wonder if the chairs on this lift were recycled from the fixed grip quad or were completely replaced.

    • Cameron Halmrast April 11, 2020 / 9:23 pm

Recycled. You can tell since the backrests are black.
