It looks to me like both sides were planned to have a mid-station at one point but only the one side got one.

Actually the West Double’s top terminal used to be next to the East Double’s mid-station. The West Double’s Tower No. 6 has the huge footing because that was the top terminal footing. The first 5 towers are the shared double-double towers because the lift used to be a double-double up to the East Double’s mid-station / the top of the West Double. When the decision was made to lengthen the West Double, they just put up some more regular towers and extended the lift to its current location.

The Summit triple gets all the attention for needing to be replaced, but these two lifts desperately need to be replaced as well. They are horrible lifts for a beginner area, they are difficult to load, very slow, and it seems like every stop is an emergency stop. Either a new fixed quad, or if Summit gets replaced, Summit could get relocated here to improve the beginner experience at Attitash

I mean they are pretty redundant with Flying Yankee right above them and the midstation on the east chair is also redundant with the Learning Center Triple. If anything they should replace the Summit Triple, then reuse the return terminal, towers and chairs from Summit with a new drive terminal to replace these lifts.

I’d rather see the summit triple relocated to where top notch was.

Um, it was redundant. There’s a reason why it was replaced. That would just be a waste of money as it would rarely ever need to run.

Flying Yankee does not work as a beginner lift, it is a bit of a traverse to get from Flying Yankee over to the beginner terrain served by the Double Doubles. Also it is a traverse back to the base of Flying Yankee from any of the beginner trails. The Doubles Doubles base are located directly in front of the learning center building. Summit triple would be fine being relocated to the Double Doubles, if ever replaced.

Using the Summit Triple to replace the doubles is a good idea. I’m thinking it would help management think the big bucks they just put into it wasn’t a waste when replacing it with a HSQ.

Has Vail scrapped or mothballed the West Double Double? It’s no longer on their lift report and they now only claim 9 lifts.

It’s still on the map, for what it’s worth.

Though of course, both sides will be scrapped with the new fixed grip quad replacing them next season.

“West double double will be closed for the 2021/2022 season to prep for it being replaced” per the EpicMix app.

I saw that. It makes no sense at all, because the East side is also being removed next summer, and yet it still can run this year, while West somehow can’t. Unless there is some major problem with the West Double that i’m not aware about, this is probably due to them going through a staff shortage. This is evidenced by the fact that two lifts (West and Kachina) did not run at all last winter, and how summer operations were almost non-existent over last summer. I feel bad for them, however I do wish they would be honest about it rather than covering it up.

    Peter, please update your site.

Today Vail took East Double-Double off the lift report and uploaded a trail map without the Double-Doubles (replacing with “Progression Quad” which is NOT YET BUILT!)

    What a joke Vail is.

They’ve been awful for 10+ years now. I’m honestly surprised they’ve lasted this long. I figured they would’ve declared bankruptcy by now. If there is a way to screw something up, they’ll find it.
