      Same reason most of these chair replacements happen: the chairs were getting old.

    The early ’80’s Yans had issues with: 1) Grips- The Type 3 grips had design problems regarding adjustment. They also experienced NDT issues that lead to further testing requirements. 2) The carriers had issues with factory weldments that lead to failures of the pipe bail under the Taco area, which could only be detected by observing displacement (later requirements included Ultra Sonic testing under the Taco OR the addition of a gusset); 3) The Sheave Assemblies of that era, S-2, S-2A and S-2B had cast aluminum flanges that were susceptible to cracking, partially because of the design material and also due to improper assembly during rebuilding (lack of direction from the Manufacturer?)
