I agree. The Garventa CTEC stealth terminals / Doppelmayr spacejet and UNIG/D-Line terminals are my favorites. Not of fan of poma/Leitner Poma terminals but I really like their chairs and sigma cabins.
the new chairs will always be better generally and I can definitely agree that the detachable terminals of the 90s were the peak of good looking designs.
Sure, the terminals do look pretty damn good, but Sugarloaf only runs this at 800 fpm so lines get pretty long weekends. Can’t wait til Sugarloaf announces upgrades for this.
Do the lines get really long? Im going this weekend and was hoping it isnt gonna be busy, especially because it is right between Xmas and NYE, and MLK or presidents day i always get those two mixed up
The SuperQuad has decent lines no matter what on weekends. This weekend should be interesting with all the new snow coming tonight, just the cold temps should keep some away. Overall, I think it will be a moderate-busy weekend. (Tips: King Pine is never very busy and you often don’t have to wait in any lines, and Sunday after lunch it becomes EMPTY. Shhhh)
You mean Sunday River? If so, even though I have never skied there I imagine that the lines for Barker, and Jordan Bowl get pretty lengthy. A lot of the ski familys coming up from Boston have to leave around noon on a Sunday, so that is something to take into consideration.
The only bad lines at Sunday River are at Barker. Chondola and Jordan are pretty manageable and move fast and only get bad on holidays but on a typical weekend day I’ve never waited in Chondola or Jordan for more than 5-8 minutes.
SR’s usually aren’t bad because of the pod set-up (which distributes skiers really well), but this year it has been unusually quiet. I have been up there for the last few weekends and have skied onto every lift except Barker and Jordan, both of which had ~5 min waits from 9:30 to 2:00. After 1:30 on Sundays the place is a ghost town.
Loaf is pretty quiet except for the SuperQuad and Skyline at peak times. SQ tends to get a pretty lengthy line (still less than anything you would find at a big vermont mountain), and Skyline usually has a small line.

This lift has also had electrical problems for pretty much its entire life. As I recall it ran on diesel for the entire 1997 season. It still regularly breaks down due to electrical problems and has to run on auxiliary power (diesel).
Not that it should make a difference, but it may be worth noting that SQ was one of the first Stealth II systems built by Garaventa CTEC.
I ski Sugarloaf almost daily and have only seen it run on diesel once or twice. One time just because the entire resort lost power. The back up is super loud, but I think it actually feels faster when on diesel. Yes, these older Stealths can be a bit of a mechanical issue at times, but overall I definitely can conclude that this is a quality lift, especially considering all the hours it has on it.

I think that the UNI-G looks awful. My favorites are UNI-M, Stealth 1-3s, and LPA more recent terminals like Adirondack Express II

Lines are not as bad as Loon, Mount Snow, or Sunday River. The Timberline chair is also often pretty empty.

What’s the purpose of the white coverings on some (but not all) of the towers?

Those are to prevent tower misalignment due to differential heating. Certain towers are prone to that when the sun heats them up.
