It provides access to the lone beginner run at Alpental. The real question is why they have a beginner run at Alpental when they have a whole mountain geared to teaching about a mile away

Don’t forget the four ski areas up there were originally independent of each other. I dimly remember when only Ski Acres and Summit were jointly owned (they added Alpental in ’82 or ’83, possibly later) and Hyak in the early ’90s. Before the mergers Alpental would have wanted its own beginner area. It’s still nice to have it, so families don’t have to split themselves between two or three different places when because some want to ski Alpental and its steeps. We did that a bunch when I was a kid- my dad and one brother and I would be up on chair 2 while my youngest brother and my mom would be skiing chair 4.

Adults usually ski in Alpental, so where do there kids go? right here.

Good point however if I was Boyne I would think about doing a land swap with the USFS and trading the little used beginner run at Alpental for land needed to better connect the west, central and east base areas. Plus they could decommission St Bernard and save on the maintenance costs for a chairlift that sees little patronage
