Peter, are you planning to take pictures of Mt. Washington on Vancouver Island, during the #LiftBlogBCRoadTrip? The lifts there seem really interesting. Perhaps you could also visit Mt. Cain, BC and Shames Mountain, BC. Do you have a preliminary BC road trip itinerary?

Hi Thomas,
I’m in Seattle visiting family (that’s where I am from originally) and just went up to Cypress for a day this week. I am hoping to ski and take lift photos this winter at Apex, Big White, Kimberley, Red, Silver Star and Whitewater. There are so many smaller areas in BC that I would love to get to and Mt. Washington is high on that list. I was just looking at their map yesterday and it appears the Green chair and Platter have been removed.

Yeah, the Boomerang Chair is really badass.

Big White posts most of the information you need to fill out the spreadsheet on their website. There are still a couple things you would have to get but it could save you some time.

Better yet, I plan to get to Big White this winter for photos and the spreadsheet. Stay tuned.

If you are in that area you ought to visit Mt Baldy, try for a Thursday as it is closed T-W, another throwback area, two fixed grip chairs and the original 1968 daylodge.

If you ever go to Mt Washington, There is 2 more ski resorts on vancouver island. Mt cain is the last Co-Op ski resort left in bc with 2 T-bars. Another ski resort is actually home to 3 abandoned GMD Mueller lifts. 2 T-bars and 1 CP double.

Actually, Forbidden Plateau’s abandoned lifts have been removed already.

Talking about Abandoned Ski lifts however, Vancouver Island has another abandoned ski resort called Mt. Arrowsmith that has an Abandoned Doppelmayr CP double (though it is not standing, it’s all at the base). Looks in rough condition though…

Do any of you know if the 2 Expo 86 gondolas were relocated?

No clue. They were apparently built in 1985 by Garaventa. They haven’t appeared anywhere, so probably scrapped sadly.

One of the best sites with old BC lift pictures is http://skiingbc.info/, lots of pictures from the mid 2000s on there.

With BC’s reopening plan, I do believe some resorts can open, despite the late season. High altitude resorts such as Revelstoke, Whitewater, sun peaks, heck even Seymour and Cypress, could open there summit chairs, with social distancing measures, such as one person per chair. Whistler is also another high altitude resort, however, you have to take a gondola, or bus to access the blackcomb glacier, 2 examples of non social distancing.
On the other hand, I believe none of BC’s lift based summer attractions will open, with Sea to Sky being a posible exception. Grouse and hells gate’s trams have no way of social distancing, unless you have 4 people sitting in the corners. Looking back, i’m surprised grouse stayed open after neighbouring cypress, as when they decided to limit the tram from 101 to 60, a massive line pooled around the parking lot like it was Christmas.

You need to ride the gondola at Revy to get up top.

Yea but you can limit to families only in the gondola.

Anyone know what model of triple chair they have at Tabor, near Prince George? There are a bunch of photos of it on their Facebook page, and it looks strange. Tapered, boxy, rectangular towers and funky looking chairs. Some kind of von roll? A weird borvig install, unusual for Canada?

Hello. I was wondering if you expect that these new types of ski lifts will be showcased in your blog? https://www.zoaeng.com/

I don’t think Peter would consider those lifts plus they fit in your backpack so they are not really lifts at all.

They certainly are lifts by definition “A ski lift is a mechanism for transporting skiers up a hill”. Perhaps not the best blog to discuss this disruptive technology on. Thanks

Peter doesn’t typically cover surface lifts like this (rope tows, magic carpets, etc).
Never seen these before. Looks like a useful tool for sessioning a booter, but I don’t think ski lift companies have much to worry about. Actually that thing looks great for sledding with the kids…

Some towers remain. According to a YouTube video on lost Canadian ski area, the rest is in storage. Hopefully, this is true. Maybe somebody will put it up.

As Kiroro pointed out, there are 12 operating resorts in BC left. But here are all the abandoned lifts that remain standing (at least partially):

2. Kelowna Mountain: 1 Hall Triple, relocated from Sunshine AB
3. Lac Le Jeune: 1 Mueller T-Bar, closed 1992
4. Mt. Arrowsmith: 1 Doppelmayr Double in parking lot, 2 Harusch T-Bars partially standing
5. Mt. Hays: Around 9-10 Mueller Gondola towers remain standing on the mountain
6. Silver Tip: 1 Doppelmayr T-Bar, hasn’t run since 1990s
7. Snowpatch: 1 Harusch T-Bar remains relatively intact, though tensioning failed
8. Tabor: Skyway Triple, Doppelmayr T-Bar, hasn’t run since 2018
9. 100 Mile House: 1 Harusch T-Bar, towers and haul rope remain

Here are the coordinates: 51.64144832683906, -121.27516318331925
Basically, the ski hill was a precursor to Mt. Timothy along with Timberland Ski Hill in Williams Lake. Both hills suffered from low elevation and short seasons. The T-Bar at Timberland was moved to Mt. Timothy (and is still in operation), while the T-Bar at 100 Mile House was left to rot.

1. Bear Mountain: Doppelmayr T-Bar
2. Mt Timothy: Mueller Triple, Mueller T-Bar, and disused Doppelmayr platter (Installed 2009, 2nd hand from Apex?, yellow towers with towerheads short lift with 5 towers, has tower similar to hart highlands)
3. Clearwater. Doppelmayr T-Bar
