This is the only high speed quad on Solitude with footrests (the 2008 high speed quads and Eagle Express not having even armrests).
The double chairlift that used to run to the summit started much higher and on a different line, at the junction of Zip a Dee, Broadway and Dynamite, and could only be reached via the Sunrise lift. The current quad starts lower down at the junction of Polaris and Dynamite, enabling it to be accessed from the Apex Express (thanks to a blue connector trail being added).
How does this lift ski? The old Summit double was remarkable and special, much like when all chairs at Snowbird and Alta were doubles. Is the added traffic overwhelming?
The traffic is extremely excruciating now days. i still remember the summit double though, you missed the days of the true solitude (when powderhorn and apex were still doubles). Back when it was the double it always stayed empty because of a particular high section in the lift lines, but when the high speed quad came in the lines every year have continued to get longer and longer. I will always miss the original summit double and to this day I still can think of how crazy it was.
Got to ski the old one in 1988 & 1989 still as a newer skier. I recall the ride was nice, but not as wide eye opening as some of those Yan doubles with half towers and the light side lines quite a ways up in the air vs us on the heavy side.. I have to admit, I was scared at first, as a 11 and 12 year old lad.
This lift is having problems it’s been closed five days in the year due to something. The old lift was more reliable

That’s typically how it is, fixed grips have less that can go wrong, 5 days is a lot though, that’s surprising.

Never mind. I’m thinking of Alta. The pain killers I am on right now for my broken hip are really messing with me, ha ha

This is one of those lifts to have a tensioning terminal that almost sounds like a drive terminal, honestly.

The old Summit would have long lines on weekends and holidays. If you catch Solitude on a weekday powder dump, this is a fantastic lapping lift
We all miss the days when all lifts in the Cottonwoods were doubles….but modern HS lifts have their value also, time marches on….
