The second Snowshoe high speed quad opened just a year after the first and services the longest and tallest trails on the mountain by far.Stealth terminal. The uppermost part of the lift is actually the flattest.Towers 19 and 20.Middle lift line. Fun fact: another very long lift called Hawthorne once served this side of the mountain with two more trails which have since been abandoned.T15.A mid-station loading point was added in 2008 to allow for early season skiing on just the upper half. The previous fixed grip lift also had this mid-station.Side view. With new snowmaking, this load point may no longer be used.Interestingly, Doppelmayr added the mid-station but still branded the controls as CTEC.Another view of the mid.Upper lift line.Steep lower part of the line. The first few towers.Bottom station.Loading area.Lots of parking for lots of chairs.Towers 1 and 2.
That mid station is a genius idea. I dont know why more mountains have that. The only other lift i can think of the top of my head that has it is the Screaming Eagle at grouse.
I think the G-CTEC controls and mid operator house on the mid were from the original Widowmaker triple. That was removed in 2006, and the mid was added in 2008.
How do you even load or unload at a fixed grip mid station on a detachable if it is going fast (500 fpm). Isn’t the purpose of a detachable to go fast?
500fpm is normal speed for a fixed grip lift, so should be easily handled while on skis. An earlier commenter said they run the lift at fixed-grip speeds when the mid-station is in use.
The mid station equipment was installed much earlier than 2008; it may have even been there at the time of original construction, because the old Cupp Run lift had a midstation, too, so it makes sense that Snowshoe would want to continue having the option upon upgrade. I know the half tower and extra set of sheaves for it were there much earlier because I once asked one of them what the heck that was there and they said it was for a mid station option. The last time I was at Snowshoe was 2004.
Best lift here. I remember riding one time and I was above the clouds. Never people over here and accesses great black and double black diamond runs. It is a very long lift but the footrests help a lot.
When are they going to add new runs here. This is the best place for advanced skiing in the Southeast.

Never. Seriously. It’s never going to happen, so don’t get your hopes up.

Payday at PCMR has a fixed-grip mid station to service the summer alpine slide run. Being a six pack though means it can be quite unwieldy to get off.

They generally run the lift at slower speeds when utilizing the mid-station.

They don’t use it anymore but they should invest in turning it into a loading mid-station

Before Shay’s, when I was a kid, we used the mid station all the time, doing Upper Cupp over and over.

I wonder if they’ll ever add more runs over here. Hopefully they do, Shay’s and Cupp are both really good, adding another run would be amazing

Great lift and great trails. It does need a few more trails but it’s still great it’s just not a full day thing to do. I do about 4 run over there.
