This lift, built in 1971 was actually the 4th built at Greek Peak, after Lift 2 (1963), Lift 3 (1969), and Lift 4 (1970). It was an infill lift, meant to supplement the two T-bars where the quad is now. Those were replaced by a relocated Borvig double in 1998, and then that lift was replaced by the quad in 2013. When it was the two doubles, I wonder if they tried to run them equally, or if they preferred to use one over the other.
Despite that this ran more or less normal speed and Chair 1A ran slow, around 325 ft/min … they would run Chair 1A daily and this would run when busy as Chair 1A had a variable speed drive. This and all the other Hall doubles at GP were one-speed and not capable of slow speed to help loading/unloading.
Amazingly, back in the 1980’s this lift often had 45-60 minute lift lines on weekends. I can also recall an early 1980’s full lift evac taking place on a weekend afternoon; and in ~1986 or ~1987 having a chair fall off the lift cable. Fortunately that occurred on a lightly skied midweek evening on the downward side (about two or 3 towers down from the unload) so no people in the chair and none underneath. I have no idea the cause, just that the lift was running again a couple of days later with the long T-Bar taking up the slack for a day or two.
I have seen this lift run more frequently this year than in years past. The mountain has been fairly crowded when I have been there as well, which is likely due to the excellent January/February they have had. Perhaps it is a COVID initiative to spread people out?
Of note on this lift: the chair numbered 130 has a slightly different design than the rest. Oddly enough, it’s not the highest-numbered chair on the line; the lift has 139 chairs. Chair 130 is still clearly a Hall chair, but its different design isn’t featured in any of the other Hall doubles at Greek Peak. No idea where it came from or why it’s on this lift.

It appears to be a later model hall double chair. My guess is that it was a replacement for the original chair 130 at some point after it was built. The original chair may have failed NDT.
Skied this week, and Greek was running 1 instead of 1A for part of the day due to snowmaking near 1A. This lift now has multispeed operation; based on sounds and a quick look at the engine setup while loading, it seems that the original motor is still used for full-speed operation, but a second motor (electric rather than diesel) was installed this summer for slow-speed operation, along with some way of smoothly shifting speeds and transferring power between the two. This also helps with startup from a full stop, which is much smoother than it used to be. New control pads / etc. have also been added, and the lift’s towers and carriers painted blue. No pictures for you, sadly — sorry about that!
This chairlift is a great reliever for the nearby Visions Quad. And offers beautiful sunsets. BEGINNERS DON’T GO ON THIS LIFT! Only offers advanced and expert trails. Can’t complain about this lift.
