Deer Valley has a lot planned! 9 lifts! Plus Big Sky having another gondola! Big year already!

I think it’s the opening of Mayflower Mountain which is why there are so many lifts. I ski a lot in Utah so I’m extremely exited. Also gondola will be a huge addition to Big Sky’s lift network.

Peter I was wondering where you got all the names for the Deer Valley lifts? I know I’ve seen some maps and renderings that show some of those names, but for example I haven’t seen anything that shows the Village Express or especially the Park Peak Express with a mid station? I’m trying to figure out which lift that one is. My guess is it’s the one that crosses the 2nd stage of the gondola?

Just a guess, but as you saw in the post he was at the meeting and Deer Valley probably announced the names and he was taking notes.

I got confirmation today that Looking Glass at winter park would be removed in the 2024/2025 ski season and a replacement lift for challenger would be 2025/2026 ski season.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Interesting shift from the master plan which called for upgrading Pony Express and Iron Horse to one HSS with mid angle station. That will definitely change the Jane side. Regarding Looking Glass, a bit surprised about removing with no replacement without upgrading Olympia but the new Pioneer HSS might absorb the extra people to offset that. Both are old lifts that are used almost every day of the regular season so that might be part of the reasoning.
LikeLike
Because I doubt they’d remove it during the season, do you mean removed during summer ’24 or summer ’25? Did you hear anything about a possible replacement?
LikeLike
I believe it will be similar to what happened at a-basin with pallavicini for challenger
LikeLike
Did you hear that from the Alpine Cable guys or someone in Lift Maintenance?

I got it from the leader of the Grand Foundations Pioneer lift auction who said to be prepared for those two lift sales from Winter Park.

Interesting. I’ve talked to a couple guys in Lift Maintenance who have said there’s rumours about looking glass but nothing about challenger.
LikeLike
I’ve talked to the planning and development director of the resort. It sounds certain that looking glass will be next in either 2025 or 2026, but that all depends on if the town gondola happens because the alignment will change.
LikeLike
I can see Looking Glass going to a limited operation schedule similar to Arrow, Endeavour, Iron Horse, and Pony Express once the Wild Spur (formerly Pioneer) opens to see if people really miss the lift. It never had huge lines but was a nice alternative when Olympia was super-busy… but now Wild Spur will be a nice alternative also.
LikeLike
looking glass removal with no replacement sounds weird to me. Olympia has some of the worst lines on busy days and its really nice to be able to take Looking Glass to be able to get back to the base side vs taking olympia

Hi Peter,
Do you know if the Taos base-to-base Gondola is planned for 2025?
The interview I heard from early 2023 was the put it in asap.

USFS postponed the decision regarding approval of the gondola until May. Apparently there were a lot of comments demanding the USFS do a comprehensive environmental review instead of a “yes/no” review. If the USFS grants approval, it’s going to be tied up in court for years before any construction begins. Welcome to Northern NM.

Gracias. This is very unfortunate. Fingers crossed that sense prevails and engineers can get the job done. Wokeness does not help the ski industry.
LikeLike
It’s not wokeness, there are communities downstream from TSV who have legitimate concerns about the possible impacts of lift construction on their water supply (drinking and irrigation). The environmental advocacy groups in Northern NM (most of them based in Santa Fe) have been filing complaints and objections to almost every project proposed on public or government land long before “woke” entered the mainstream lexicon. There’s also concern that access to the Williams Lake trailhead and the Wheeler Peak Wilderness will be limited or closed off; it’s a popular trail in the winter for backcountry skiing and in the summer for hiking Wheeler Peak (highest mountain in NM). I don’t think summer access would be affected too much because hikers can park at the Bavarian adjacent to the trailhead or at TSV’s base parking and hike up Rubezahl (aka Home Run) to the trailhead. Winter access is trickier because the road from the base up to the trailhead is snowpacked and requires snow tires/chains. If TSV were to make the gondola free to use in the winter (a la Telluride’s gondola) for backcountry skiers and snowshoers, I think that would minimize the objections from the outdoor enthusiasts and their advocacy groups. TSV scans lift tickets at only two lifts, Lifts 1 and 4. I would like to know where TSV will place the terminals because there isn’t a lot of room at both the base and at the bottom of Kachina Basin.
LikeLike
I think a Deer Valley lift may be missing. I was under the impression both Pioche lifts would be in operation for 2025-26 (Pioche Express & Pioche Access Express are the construction names), as both are really needed to have Pioche Village be online. The developer confirmed the timeline this week, with Mayflower Village scheduled to open in December 2024 (alongside the temporarily named Lift 3) and Pioche Village scheduled to open in December 2025.
LikeLike
Where did they confirm that?
LikeLike
Grand Hyatt Deer Valley is opening in Mayflower Village in December 2024 with lift accessibility. They have mentioned it being up to three lifts, but I would be shocked if it is more than just one.
Prospective Marcella buyers (ski-in/ski-out homesites) are being told that they will have slope access in either December 2024 for Marcella Mountain plots (adjacent to Mayflower Village) or December 2025 for Marcella at Jordanelle Ridge plots (adjacent to Pioche Village). Looking at a site map, there is no way to give those latter homesites ski-in/ski-out access without both Pioche lifts.
Phase 1 (2024+2025) is 10 lifts, but perhaps they do not count the gondola as one of the lifts? Or it may be only counted as a single lift?

LPA was probably chosen since the property and condo owners where the bottom station is are going to be footing part of the cost, and went with the cheapest option, which is LPA. Obviously, I’m disappointed its not a D-Line and that the lift is going to stick out like a sore thumb amongst all of the Dopp terminals, but what can you do.
LikeLike
@ottawasnowboarder
I disagree.
If they were going to go the cheap way I don’t think they would have chosen a direct drive. Those easily run the cost of the lift up $500K-$1M .
LikeLike
Yeah wish it was going Doppelmayr instead LPA to keep the mountain consistent with all the other lifts. Really makes ya wonder why they chose LPA
LikeLike
@OTTWASNOWBOARDER, there is nothing wrong with the LPA terminal, inside features, wood underskins, direct drive and a good paint scheme makes them on par with Doppelmayr’s offerings.
I don’t think it will stick out, it will be like the nearby Red Pine gondola. More variety is better (Steamboat)

Peter, when did steamboat announce the new sunshine express? Will they also be putting a new sundown express in?
LikeLike
I believe Steamboat should upgrade Sundown to a 6 pack before Sunshine. The lift is one of the most popular on the mountain, older than Sunshine, and could use a capacity upgrade.
I believe Steamboat decided to upgrade Sunshine first based on the Wild Blue gondola bringing more beginners, especially those from ski school, to the top of the mountain. Since Sunshine has more beginner terrain I believe it made more sense to Steamboat to upgrade that first rather than Sundown.

heard from several lift mechs at work that B quad is coming out and a detach 6er is going in on a new alignment at okemo that will have an upper terminal above village run. The lower terminal will be lookers right of A quad where the ski school meeting place building is currently located going up and over A quad with will remain as a reliever. At some point B quad will them be reinstalled on the gore side going up over the carpets and unloading above them. The upper carpet will be removed and also installed at a different location.
LikeLike
Interesting choice of alignment, having towers on lower mountain road and skier traffic being dumped in an already overcrowded section of trail isn’t exactly going to solve Okemo’s ant problem. On google earth it appears that it would have to go to the mountain road Village run intersection to not require a rather extreme flyover over the black ridge and half pipe, which would probably be preferable to flooding lower arrow with traffic. Perhaps with some widening of lower mountain road and village run traffic flow could be managed, but Vail hasn’t seemed particularly concerned with the ant problem in the past.
LikeLike
the good thing about this alignment is it is a distribution point to go to solitude / j gore or to the main face instead of everyone just having to go to main face. The lower lifts are simply one ride in the morning unless your a beginner!

A six pack seems like overkill in that pod – for the mountain’s first sixer. Unless it’s for added wind resistance (due to weight).
LikeLike
Timberline gets traffic from Skyline and Superquad currently. The local assumption is the new 6 pack will start at a lower point down closer to the top of Bucksaw which will increase the pressure on Timberline’s uphill capacity.

Yes, correct.

Peter, what does that mean? R2 D-Line terminal? Is it just another style of terminal?

R1 is the standard D-Line terminal, (see Ramcharger / Swifty)
R2 is the glass box design, its not as common but there’s a handful in europe. The renderings for the new big sky gondola are R2’s

Being removed in the summer of 2024. Lucifer’s Lift at the Devil’s Glen Country Club, Glen Huron Ont. Lucifer’s is a 1990 Borvig Quad, 150 HP, 1604 feet, 492 vert. Here’s hoping a new one goes in its place in the next year or two. Lucifer’s was largely moth balled after the Hades Chair, a 2012 Leiter -Poma Quad was installed, that went in parallel to the Lucifer lift. After 2012 Lucifer’s sat mostly on standby, mostly unused. By comparison, the original Hades Chair , a 1969 Hall double, lasted 43 years, while Lucifer’s was a maintenance headache after just 22 years. Cheers to Hall, Riblet and the other early ski lift builders

Ive got a question about Doppelmayr controls. Does anybody know what “Manual Launching” does for a lift? I’ve seen it on a few UNI-G lifts like Gad 2 at Snowbird. I don’t have any pictures but the best way to describe it is that it’s a button covered by a plastic cover that can be flipped up and it’s right in the middle of the control panel. It’s a clear cover and the caption below says Manual Launching. Can someone explain?
LikeLike
Yes. If the spacing goes south, there’s a procedure to get it back (in a rough fashion). The system will correct for small discrepancies after manually respacing the line. I believe there’s an indicator of some sort to give the mechanic a cue as to *when* to launch. We don’t have that feature on either of our UNI-G’s but I’m pretty sure that’s what it is.

That makes a ton of sense to me now. thanks. also i’m not sure which UNI-G’s have this feature and don’t. But i know i have seen it on a few lifts that are UNI-G’s.

Apparently it was going to be exceedingly expensive to do it as one lift so they are looking at serving the lower part with a high speed quad and the upper part with a six. The lower lift would follow a different alignment than shown on the current map. The press release put out with the new map today confirms 6 chairlifts + the gondola for phase 2. That could be Neptune, Pioche, Galena, Pinyon, Revelator Lower and Revelator Upper. Also hearing the six pack adjacent to the gondola mid-station may happen sooner rather than later. Plus potential upgrades in existing Deer Valley to Carpenter, Mayflower, Crown Point, Northside and Quincy in the next few years.

The Rex replacement has been planned for years, but put off because Crystal is not generating enough profit. Crystal has more customers than can fit in the parking lot many weekends, so there isn’t a lot of incentive to do something to draw more customers. A Kelly’s gap lift would likely require more snowmaking, which besides being expensive would require more water. Crystal is unlikely to get the okay to use more water, the current snowmaking water rights were purchased from the Gold Hill’s water rights. I think even this was reduced by the Forest Service. The basic tenant is any water diverted from streams and turned into snow is not 100 percent returned to the streams due to evaporation. Reduction in stream flow is not favored by the Forest Service.

This is looking like a really light year for Boyne compared to what we’re used to from them. There are only 4 projects:
•Explorer Gondola at Big Sky: This has been a multiyear project, getting completed this summer
•Edelweiss at Summit at Snoqualmie: This has also been a multiyear project, getting completed this summer
•Gateway Gondola at Loon: They are partnering with a developer on this, likely meaning they aren’t putting much capital into it
•Bear Back platter lift at Big Sky: The resort hasn’t publicized this project and it isn’t an experience improvement. Likely means a badly needed upgrade for mechanical reasons.
I wonder if they needed to take a step back from the massive investment binge they’ve been on
LikeLike
As a skier at Loon I can confidently say there are no major upgrades they could do. However they did announce plans for a massive 300 acre expansion on south peak for the future.
They are also adding a six at sugarloaf replacing timberline.
In addition, they are building bike parks at sugarloaf and brighton.

I’m not sure how the contracts for lifts are normally structured, but I do wonder if the anticipation of 25%+ tariffs would cause ski resort operators to pause potential lift projects until the situation is more stable. D-Lines are already expensive and are largely manufactured in Europe. It would depend on whether the contract allows the manufacturer to pass on unanticipated costs such as tariffs to the ski resort, after the contract was signed.

At the bare minimum Loon needs a new Gondola. The capacity is a problem and the lift is getting really old. They also had plans for D-Line 6 packs on Lincoln Express and North Peak in their Flight Plan 2030. The 6 pack Timberline at The Loaf isn’t happening until next summer. And even if you want to count that, it is a used lift from Big Sky.
My point is that this year has a noticeably lower number of lift upgrades for Boyne. It seems the only ones they are currently proceeding with are ones that have already been started, one that a developer is helping pay for, and one that is likely facing a needed replacement for age/mechanical reasons. There weren’t huge new announcements to push ahead with their bold capital plans
