Caribou – Marmot Basin, AB

This classic Doppelmayr double was among the first lifts built at Marmot Basin, then called Upper Caribou.
The lift was retired in 2011, when a Leitner-Poma high speed quad duplicated most of its alignment.
The top terminal with counterweight tensioning.
Unloading before the top bullwheel.
View down an empty lift line.
Some sheaves have been removed, likely for the still operating Knob double.
View up the line.
Tower 2.
Loading area and motor room.
Fixed drive station.
View up from the load point.

Why didn’t they replace the caribou double with a newer lift?

Does anyone have a picture of this lift before they shortened it around 1980?

Did this lift have Center Pole chairs? I think there are 4 Center Pole lifts remaining in the USA

There’s quite a few more than just 4 center pole lifts remaining in the USA. Mt. Spokane has 5, Mission Ridge has 3, Silver Mt. has 1, Lookout Pass has 2, and that’s just in the inland Pacific Northwest.

Yeah, there’s a lot more than 4 remaining. 7A at Taos; Looking Glass at Winter Park; Bell Mountain at Aspen; the chairlift at Hesperus; Engineer, Twilight, and Grizzly at Purgatory; and Primo and Segundo at Sunlight are just some of the ones operating in my neck of the woods which come to mind.
