I have an interesting observation. I noticed the chairs on 13 and 14 are what I consider the new style bail chairs from YAN. Since 12, 13, and 14 were built the same year and 12 has the old style chairs that are reminiscent of the time period for YAN, I wonder if the chairs on 13 and 14 were upgraded at some point?

No. 2021 and still the old, super slow double chairs. I’ve been to Mammoth maybe 15 times past 3 years, and saw 2 adults fall off them (like 10+ feet off ground.) Their fault, but the chairs are not safe. Mammoth is an embarrassment for still not upgrading chairs 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, and the nightmarish 21 and 25

A chair upgrade doesn’t have anything to do with line speed. Most likely the old chairs failed NDT. Would restraint bars really do anything anyway? If they don’t have footrests, they’re just not heavy enough to stop anyone from falling.

I still do not understand why people focus on the comfort bars as being a panacea for falling out of a chair. 99% of the time a person falls out of a chair because one is not riding the chair correctly.

Danny- My recollection is Yan came out with the round bail carriers for the 3C version in 1977. The 2C version came out in 1978. So yes, 13 & 14 had their carriers replaced at some point.

Michael, thank you for the reply. I was not sure if perhaps Yan had both carriers available at the same time, but you answered that question.

As one who does said maintenance, I’ll bite. What do you mean by ‘it’s on maintenance’? That’s pretty vague.

Nah wrong it isn’t a maintenance issues it’s staffing. We open it at 3pm when it’s time to leave the backside. Come be a lifty

Also of note chair 13 received a new drive system and can now run on slow at like 100 fpm

Mammoth is such a joke. They have not done any chairlift upgrades in 20 years- since they moved Chair 5 over a bit. Chairs 12, 13, 14 are from like 1971 and barely move, and are DANGEROUS! Chairs 7, 8, 25 are a total joke. Dave McCoy always took his profit and reinvested it into new chairlifts. Owners of Mammoth are so cheap! And the Mammoth Mountain Inn by Main Lodge should have been torn down 40 years ago. What a dump on a choice piece of land! For those of you who haven’t been to that dump- no AC, 1940s like youth hostel, smelly, run down!

If you want EVERY single lift to be recent then maybe got to Vail! A lift isnt dangerous just bc you had a few too many lift loading mishaps, and if you REALLY want the hotel to be much nicer, then go to Vail. Or better yet, just don’t ski at areas that don’t have a detachable lift, bc you’ll think their soooo unsafe.

Chair 5 was replaced only 11 years before your comment was posted. And also, since then, mammoth has installed two brand new six packs
