Chair 3 – Sandia Peak, NM

This is one of the longest Riblet lifts ever built with 41 towers and 240 chairs. It used to have even more carriers.
Fixed drive terminal up top.
Lower section of the lift line.
Another view of the line.
Bottom terminal with extended tension carriage.
Compression towers 1 and 2.
View up from the base area.
Middle part of the line.
Upper lift line.
The last 10 towers or so.
Breakover towers.

Under the assumption that the original capacity was 1200, some quick ratios gave me about 262

I actually remember the lift with 262 chairs. Right after Chair 1’s removal, this lift reduced capacity by 22 chairs and speed was reduced to 425 FPM. I remember nearly falling off this when I was about 6 yrs old in December 2016 near tower 31. I had seen the last chair being labelled as 262 and going, “Now THAT’S a lot of chairs!” Too bad Chair 1 has not run since 2017.

Wait a moment…they decommissioned one lift, reduced the capacity of the other, AND added a summit restaurant!? What are they thinking!? Does this mean that an HSQ or HSS in in order?

The entire ski resort is closed and has been for a few seasons now. Would not expect any lift investment under current ownership.

They opened it for a little while in 2021 and at least a day in 2022. This lift was also built in 1981 as well and used to have 262 chairs. The lift’s old capacity was of 1200 at 500 FPM. Since 2017, it’s 425 FPM, 240 chairs, and (I have no idea) capacity.

And technically it is still open. The only part is that the lifts are not open. You have to walk 7500+ feet back up though.

Eek! That is rather a lot of hiking while carrying skis! If the owners are reading this, please reopen the lifts!

I don’t think they will anytime soon after this incident I recorded

It’s too dangerous for a tree to be on there that long. It could send everything down

How is it ‘too dangerous’? It already fell on the line. There’s little else that can happen.

A tree falling on a liftline is not that odd of an occurrence and can be fixed.

PBROPETECH the reason it’s dangerous is that the comm line got tangled and there was a derailment on the light side

I understand what happened. I’ve dealt with trees on line before. My point was that the tree already fell, so the damage is done. Now it’ll have to be cleaned up before the lift runs, sure. But unless someone hits a start while the tree is still on line what else is there?

As of 2024, half of this lift’s chairs were removed. The chairs currently on the line are the even-numbered ones. I was also told the drive motor was getting fixed so this lift could run faster, so it seems they’re gonna run this at 450-500fpm soon. It had been running slower at 425 since 2017

I saw a video of this place on the news for this year’s opening day. All 240 chairs were back, instead of 120

Not exactly sure how, but this lift broke on opening day. They reopened the lift a day later somehow

Strange to see a Riblet that is top drive with an overhead motor. That can’t be a common, right?

this is a fairly common design more so on their later lifts
