This unique chairlift sits in a man made floodway and is designed to be submerged in water come spring. The top drive station is above flood stage and stays dry. This is one of the last remaining Blue Mountain lifts with original chairs. The drive station up top.Side view of the fixed drive.View down the short lift line with only 20 chairs.Lift overview.Return station and counterweight.Another view of the lift seen from the other side of the floodway.
I asked Patrick’s Motors on YouTube this exact question. His response:
“In 2006 a BM carrier came off the line at a resort in Ontario seriously injuring a skier. Prior there had been issues with cracks developing. Shortly after a bulletin came out that involved adding plates to several areas of hanger arm and chair to reinforce them with the understanding that this was a temporary fix and new carriers should be sourced. 1996 and up BM quad carriers are still running at many resorts as this was a entirely new design though they still require 100% NDT every year.”
Always wondered why almost all BM Lifts brand chairlifts had their chairs replaced.

the original BM brand chairs must have had a number of design & engineering flaws. Oh and what resort did the incident occur at?

How would the counterweight being underwater affect the tension of the lift?
