I have not found the exact location on a trail map showing where this lift is but it appears that a gondola was built here the same year that the Eagle Chairlift ceased operations. That is assuming that the information on the lift blog is accurate. The Ptarmigan quad lift was also built in 2008 which could also have something to do with the Eagle Double closing.
The Eagle chairlift was also 33 years old when they stopped using it so it probably needed significant repairs or upgrades. And a gondola gives a ski area more capacity than a double chairlift at the end of the its useful life. Same with a quad chairlift.
Lake Louise was strugling financialy during the time when RCR almost collapsed, this is why the Olympic chair was retired, for Eagle, more capacity was required as well as an easy route to the summit of Ptarmigan, Ptarmigan was not a deciding factor for Eagle’s removal as it serves a completly different face, and the previous Yan quad had the same capacity. Age was not a factor, 33 is quite young for a fixed grip lift, Lake Louise also wanted the gondola.
Hi Walt. Re the old Eagle chairlift at lake louise. I worked on the building of it in1971. I was in the engineering of it. I ran the survey, centerline and elevations, and keeping track of the critical d.o.t. specs and measurements. I was with R.E. Postill and Sons of vernon b.c. We contracted for Mueller Lifts of Zurich office in Vernon b.c. l have many fond and dark memories of building it including swarms of bugs a blizzard in mid July a heart attack of our cat operator in the middle of nowhere etc. Which I could share if you are inerested
I may be crazy, but I believe this was converted to run triple chairs at some point? I remember they were uncomfortable and I clobbered my shoulder when loading one time (but perhaps I’m conflating old memories)
Why was this Lift abandoned?

I wish Eagle was reborn as a HSQ, to provide redundancy to the gondola and give egress to those coming from Whitehorn Bistro to get to mid mountain.
