I normally would not say that a lift like this will likely get an upgrade to a detachable quad, but given its similarities with Quarter Dollar and Dollar, both of whom went detachable over a decade ago, and the fact its base is surrounded by tens of millions of dollars of real estate, I would not be surprised if it occurred at some point in the future.
Perhaps.. we might see some sort of deal worked out with Doppie to replace this, Half Dollar, (or they eliminate half dollar altogether) Lookout on Bald Mountain, or maybe eliminate Lookout, and upgrade Mayday to a HSQ? So eliminate Half Dollar and Lookout (the lift to nowhere) and upgrade Elkhorn and Mayday. Personally I would like to see Lookout remain.. even if it is the lift to nowhere.. it’s a nice peaceful slow and steady ride.
Since usually there is low snow on Elkhorn lift it usually only runs weekends for a month of the winter, I think it would be highly unlikely to get a HSQ replacement but rather if anything did happen to this lift it would be taken out without a replacement.
We took a few low-key laps off Elkhorn on a sunny March day this year, it was quite pleasant. It would indeed be overkill to replace it with anything bigger, but I’d hate to see it removed.
I’ve stayed in Elkhorn Village in the summertime for vacation a few times, and have hiked around that lift and a few others on Dollar. I can see it being useful in the wintertime. I hope it doesn’t get removed either, but I suppose HOA fees will dictate that since it is technically owned by the HOA, with Sun Valley staffing it and servicing it. Given that it only operates maybe 3 months of the year the hours on it would be low. There are some years it doesn’t operate at all if there isn’t enough snowfall. No snow making over there that I saw when I was last there about 15 years ago

Elkhorn has been closed for much if not all of this season it seems.

Opened up this week, and Sun Valley posted about it on their FB page. Good to see her turning again.

Still running in late March. Glad to see it appears to be back in regular operation!
