Glade – Catamount, MA/NY

Much of the equipment for this lift came from a detachable so SkyTrans was hired to fabricate a fixed return terminal.

    It’s a Borvig! It’s a Hall! It’s a. . .Poma? (Return terminal. Sorry. I blame Covid. Even if that’s not the case.)

Is it still a mystery where all the Poma components are from? The slatted backrests should help narrow it down.

The drive came from Sugarbush on the former Valley House double.

Most of the parts here were sourced through West Mountain, NY. The chairs are left over from Haystack’s former Barnstormer Triple, which was reinstalled as West’s summit lift in 2015. The drive terminal, also sourced through West, was originally installed on Sugarbush’s Valley House Double and was moved to West to be installed with the leftover Barnstormer components, although West opted to install a new Partek in 2019 instead. The towers were sourced, I believe, from the former Big Burn lift at Snowmass. The return is custom-made by Skytrans

Surprisingly, I noticed while riding today that all of the unequal sheave assemblies have more wheels on the descending side. Is it possible that they designed the towers for the lift to run clockwise and a mistake was made? If that was the case, perhaps they had to compensate by adding fewer chairs than planned?

This is super interesting, never seen anything like it. Hopefully the fewer amount of sheaves can handle the heavy side and this isn’t an engineering disaster. It can certainly handle a 100% download capacity though!

The lift shack being on the left side of the drive terminal also suggests an oopsy was made. The NESH photos from January 2022 show both lift shacks setup for a clockwise rotation. Would any components in the drive terminal such as the rollback preventer make changing the direction of travel difficult? The March 2023 NESH photos show that the lift still has more sheaves on the light side.

me and some family/friends skied here once back in the 2022-2023 season, and back then i liked to record videos and upload them to yt, and that trip i made a video on this exact chairlift. i had been going to catamount for many years (since around the 2014-2015 or 2015-2016 season i think), so i remember back when this and catamount were just old doubles. i have a memory where i got to go on the old glade by myself for the first time, probably one of my favorite memories i had of those times honesty. we were going to catamount less starting the 2020-2021 season in favor of the ORDA mountains, and that one trip in 2022-2023 is the last time i’ve went there. anyway i think i’ve gotten a quite bit carried away, soooo here’s the video i was talking about: https://youtu.be/RQKrS6m80-I?si=zJPOkwdLfpvqo7i2 (please disregard the annoying 12 year old voice-)
