Jordan Mountain – Sunday River, ME

This lift has a mix of Hall and CTEC equipment.
Loading and unloading in both directions.
Riding towards Jordan Bowl.
Cresting the hill between Aurora and Jordan Bowl.
Riding down into Jordan Bowl.
CTEC Sprint drive terminal at Jordan Bowl.
Another view of the drive.
Riding back to Aurora.

I do not think this is in the mountain’s long-term plans, but I would like to see this lift removed and replaced with one from the base of Jordan to Aurora Peak. Terrain-wise, there is really a blank slate in this area between Cyclone, Northern Lights, and Firestar where a decent pod could be developed. Also, this lift is pretty useless in its existing alignment because it is impossible to ski at all from either side without taking an additional lift. Yes, this would make it slightly more inconvenient to go out to Jordan, but simultaneously upgrading Aurora to a detachable would remove this inconvenience.

Quite frankly, that is not a good idea and wouldn’t make much sense. This lift is just to get a flow of people moving in either direction between two base areas when it’s crowded. The area in-between isn’t really ideal for trails and people trying to crossover between peaks which is why there’s really only 1 trail in there (the rest are trails getting over to Jordan or Aurora).

Actually 1 regular trail and 2 glades. What I mean by “Skiable” trails are the trails in this area that are right down the fall line of what your talking about; which is the space in-between Oz and Aurora. Flying Monkey, Which Way, and Poppy Fields is mainly what I’m referring to. The rest (Kansas, Cyclone, Firestar) are really just connector trails meant to get you from peak to peak.

My point is that there is potential to develop an actual lap-able pod over here and replace an underutilized lift. The terrain I mentioned, especially skiers’ lift off of Northern Lights above Firestar, is well-pitched for intermediate and advanced skiers and similar in length to Oz’s trails.

Even when Jordan 8 or Aurora are crowded, no one really uses this lift. Putting a lift from the base of Jordan to the top of Aurora and simultaneously cutting the trails I proposed would create a new pod to entice skiers away from Jordan 8 while continuing to provide the Jordan base with two lifts for redundancy. Aurora base would still have a secondary lift in Quantum Leap, while Jordan would remain accessible from Spruce in the event of Aurora having a breakdown. If Jordan is truly going to be the center of Sunday River in the future as Boyne has suggested, it needs a second lift that people actually use or Jordan 8’s lift lines will grow out of control.

Why does this lift have Hall chairs, grips, and one tower with a Hall depression sheave train?

before the detachables were installed, the South Ridge area had I think two doubles and a triple. Chairs came from one of the old doubles over there. In fact I used to assume that the rest of the lift had been moved over from South Ridge too.

the thought has crossed my mind, during long traverses across the resort, that I wish they’d just built a two-way gondola from Jordan all the way to the South Ridge base. But penciling it out on a map, I can see why the length would have been impractical, or at least very expensive. Hope this double doesn’t get too crowded with people out to look at the new 8-pack.

Those two towers after you crest the ridge heading into Jordan are just SO HIGH they give me a tingle in my bucket area. Not in a good way – I try and avoid this one!
