This got new SkyTrac controls a few years ago. Also, chair number 50 on Thaynes, Motherlode, and Jupiter was painted gold for PCMR’s 50th anniversary in 2013. The gold paint, really beat up now, remains.
One of my favorite lifts at PC. There is so many damn lifts I havent rode all of them yet. I rode all lifts on the caynons side besides Sunrise and High meadow (The old fixed grip). Also does PC have the most lifts in the US?
The chairs on Jupiter received safety bars as part of Vail Resorts’ purchase of PCMR, as did all other fixed grips on the mountain that didn’t already have them.
Both this lift and Thaynes down the canyon a bit, got new SkyTrac controls. There is a very low spot on this lift about tower 15 which people then think it is okay to jump off. This area is roped off… but I have seen tracks of where people have jumped off the lift. Even though this lift is pretty old, it still runs pretty great!
Purely from an age perspective, it will probably have to be replaced somewhat soon. It will likely become a fixed-grip triple at that point, as there is no need for a high-speed or massive capacity increase.
Using the age logic, it probably makes sense to replace Thaynes first, as in addition to being one year older, it serves a more well-rounded pod. A new lift there could incentivize intermediate skiers to move up the ridge from King Con/Silverlode to Thaynes/Motherlode.
It may be old but parts are still readily available and if there is no real need to replace it, why bother? So what if it is a bit old. Doesn’t mean it is not safe.
Jupiter is far down anyone’s wish list for replacement. Thaynes would most likely go first and then provide a bunch of spare parts when the time comes since it must have something like 1.5x the lifetime hours as Jupiter (serving intermediate terrain that is open most of the season). Around the same vintage as Pali at Arapahoe Basin and I hope they leave it alone for years.
Interestingly though none of the older PCMR fixed grips got the new red and gray paint job like most of the other lifts after the Vail acquisition. As of last year it and Thaynes were still in the old black and white paint.
I think if Pioneer gets replaced they should run it on an alignment from the bottom of Thaynes to the top of Jupiter to alleviate the long lines Jupiter can get on powder days and to make it easier to access.
It would be nice if Park City built a lift adjacent to Jupiter going up to Jupiter Peak. Nothing fancy, just a simple fixed-grip double or triple would be fine. (Perhaps using parts of Sunrise when that lift is upgraded?) I know there is a group of people who like their in-bounds hiking terrain, but Park City still has a lot of hiking terrain on Pinecone Ridge, and more lift-serviced expert terrain can help make the mountain more appealing as a well-rounded resort. Plus, I really do not think it would get too skied off with half of the available terrain requiring a second lift ride on Pioneer to lap and the overall capacity being low.
I personally think the best lift for that pod would be a HSQ running either from the bottom of Pioneer/McConkeys to Jupiter Peak, or from where Sampson/Comstock/Red Fox/Hawkeye, Sundog, and Georgeanna all meet up to Jupiter Peak. Then make the hike from McConkey’s to Jupiter peak a blue run and call it Upper Georgeanna to allow intermediates to enjoy the view up there.
I heard a rumor that the opening of this lift is delayed for the 21-22 season due to the operations team waiting on parts. Can anyone confirm or deny this rumor? Any clue when/if it’s going to run this season? Anxious to ski this terrain this year. Hoping that Vail can get it running soon.

Unfortunately, it appears that some very nice terrain off of this lift which was closed for the entirety of this season, will not return next season.

I see Pioneer becoming a high speed quad, Thaynes becoming a triple chairlift, and old Thaynes becoming a parts donor for Jupiter.
