I see. Schumann Summit Express is similar to the Mt Rainier Gondola at Crystal Mtn in Washington. Both lifts are designed for foot traffic (although skiers can ride it too).
its best use in winter is to quickly access other parts of the mountain, but it does have some advantages as a lift to ski from directly. If you want to lap Comet, starting your day on this means a better first lap without having to meander down boring terrain for a few hundred vert.
It also does access a few great runs off the looker’s left. I found som great powder in the trees because it isn’t really the longest or most extreme terrain at Silver Star. By 1pm on a 12″ day Powder Gulch and Silver Woods had 10 min lift lines (the horror) while there was 0 line for the gondi. And it was dumping so the cabins were great… A common BC “problem”.
Red sheaves on Doppelmayr lifts are the drop sheaves. Like others have said, they weigh more and are designed to “drop” if there is a derailment of the haul rope. This will move the sheaves train in a way that breaks a brittle bar and triggers a stop on the lift. This is the secondary RPD system, the primary is a system of rope-monitoring proximity switches.

With the larger intervals, I’d say the Comet Express is still the main lift for lapping the trails in this pod.

Why are some sheaves painted red? I’ve noticed that at other resorts too, and they always seem to be the outside ones in runs of four/six
