South Ridge B – Okemo, VT

Contrary to the name, South Ridge B is actually the older of the two parallel quad chairs.
Both stations have carpets and the unloading one is the first in the whole country.
Unloading carpet!
Top bullwheel.
View down from the top terminal.
Looking up the middle part of the line.
Lower lift line view.
Drive next to its sister.

What is the point of an unloading carpet? Or loading, for that matter. I’ve never heard a clutch of grizzled mechanics cheer louder than summer of ’00 at CM when the heli that was flying towers for new 3 flew the old carpet out of, I think, the woods by the bottom of old 9. I’ve always heard people refer to them as the tragic carpet. Every one I’ve seen installed just had a snow covering so it could be used like a normal ramp.

Unloading ones are not that useful, but loading ones allow fixed grip lifts to run at higher speeds

In theory. In practise, not so much. The aforementioned carpet-under-the-helicopter was more trouble than it was worth and we eventually disconnected the motor and covered it with snow until the lift was removed. We tried multiple ways to make it work properly (skier-wise, it ran fine mechanically) but gave up.
