If you zoom in on the rear view of the Drive terminal you can barely make out a grip hoist on the right hand side. The grip hoist cable was reeved through a set of pulleys, one end connected to a short stroke hydraulic cylinder in the floor behind the bullwheel. The grip hoist was used to take slake out of the tension system, for rope stretch rigging etc. There is a plate clamp safety device at the end of the grip hoist cable termination. So basically hydraulic tension.
