The original Sultan began at the intersection of Perseverance and Tycoon next to tower 6 on the new lift and ran up the skiers’ left of Perseverance instead of crossing over. The terrain below that was new with the high speed quad in 2005. This is DV’s longest vertical lift by a few hundred feet.

I believe the old Yan triple lives on as timberline at Northstar, CA

Late reply. Parts do but not all the triple chairs stuck around DV for their other lifts and a slight capacity upgrade for red cloud a couple years ago. The top terminal was probably reused at Northstar along with some sheeves and towers. Lots of the sheeves went to Nordic valley for Crocket. The bottom terminal of Timberline came from another lift the amount of modding to that existing structure would be to much.

Looks a lot like Silver Strike and Sterling lifts. Accesses steeper blues but it’s a very quiet lift.

Peter’s new last picture (“Lift Overview”) is the view when coming down from the new Keetley lift in area that used to be out of bounds. I wonder if anyone will think to paint the name on the back and far side of the bottom terminal this summer since that’s the view many people will see for the first time coming from the new base area.

With the way the base of this lift often gets slammed with skiers coming off of Keetley, I wonder if DV will consider upgrading this to a sixer. Either that or upgrade Crown Point to an HSQ and extend it all the way to the base of Sultan to help empty it out on busy days. Then again, the top of the current Crown Point ends in a very tight space so it might be difficult to fit a larger terminal there without some significant landscaping. That, and the new expansion will probably (hopefully) provide more egress points for skiers moving west. Who knows.

Look at Deer Valley’s expansion trail map and you’ll see crown points replacement will extend below the bottom of Sultan. It’ll likely be detachable, its longer than Burns and they clearly had the will to make that a detach too. That alone will double out-of-area capacity, similar to how DMX at Snowbasin solved the Strawberry bottleneck almost immediately.

Sultan’s problems are a growing pain since it is (currently) the only way back from the east village to the core ski area. You’ve got traffic from silver lake + everyone on Keetley + people lapping Sultan converging on one spot.

By next season, there will be a gondola out of the east village to park peak, plus Pioche express over to Jordanelle Gondola and Galena Express below Sultan to offer more repeat skiing. That will drastically reduce Sultan’s bottleneck, perhaps permanently but at that point an extended Crown Point will be a better solution to address any lingering crowds.

The lift is also barely 20 years old, there are other detaches (Carpenter, Northside, Quincy, Silver Lake) that need the upgrade more than Sultan.

There are plans to install a lift called Lift 8 going from the bottom of the Little Giant trail (accessible from Sultan) to the current Crown Point terminus. Either it’ll replace Crown Point which is my guess or not. If Lift 8 gets installed, Sultan wouldn’t be slammed with crowds coming from Keetley, Mayflower or other areas funneling into it. Deer Valley should also reconfigure the maze setup for Sultan to make things easier for guests coming from the Keetley side, Mayflower, etc. and maybe be converted to inline loading as the 90 degree loading looks a bit weird with the new trail

Lift 8 will replace Crown Point, that is the plan. I hope they get Lift 8 built sooner then later. All the other new lifts opening next year will help spread out traffic and reduce the strain on Sultan significantly, but Lift 8 will serve a unique purpose in getting people from East Village over to Silver Lake and Snow Park without the need to ride all the way up to Bald Mountain (via Sultan) or Park Peak (via the new gondola). You’ll be able to ride Keetley to Lift 8 and ski right down to Snow Park.
