There have only been four ski areas in North America who bought or have high-speed triples. Summit Express @ Mt. Bachelor (Doppelmayr / Replaced in 97), Gore Mountain (VonRoll / Removed), Ruthies @ Aspen (POMA) & Alta (Garaventa CTEC).
In Europe, there are a lot. My favorite lift is the Kumme-Rothorn detachable triple. I believe it is a Garaventa built in 1983. It is very noisy and uncomfortable but that’s what makes it fun!

When this is replaced with a Chondola, where could is be relocated to? It’s way to new to scrap. Maybe to replace Wildcat?* Unfortunately, Albion will probably be scrapped because of its age, but we’ll have to wait and see…

I don’t know why Alta wants a chondola here instead of a detachable quad. They want the new lift to have a capacity of 2400 pph and the current lift isn’t extremely cold, windy, lengthly, or used in the summer where gondola cabins would be useful. Even for a beginner lift, a detachable quad should be sufficient. If they wanted the ability to expand capacity, a detachable six-pack would make sense. Maybe I am missing some reason to spend all that extra money…
It is used in the Summer. As part of a long term plan to reduce crowding in Albion Basin, the FS and Alta have an agreement to run Sunnyside during the Summer and charge a fee for vehicles entering the basin. It’s relatively new, and not in effect this year due to base construction. Plus, Alta doesn’t mind spending extra for a better experience, and cabins are certainly nice on cold days.
Alta didn’t have bars on any lifts for a long time.The pictures without the bars are just older. His Collins pictures are pre-2007 at least. A kid fell off Sunnyside circa 2010, so they added the one’s with the teeth to everything but they YAN doubles. The teeth are vicious, but they work.
The difference in cost between a quad and a triple is negligible. The bulk of the cost difference between a detach and a fixed-grip is in the grips and terminals. A ‘lower-budget area’ that can’t afford a detach quad wouldn’t be able to buy a detach triple either.

Instead of replacing the current lift, replace the current management. If they knew supply chain issues were going to be a problem, they should have delayed the six pack until the had every nut and bolt. Continue to use the triple till your ready.
You can’t install the new lift without taking out the old one. Supply chain issues are a common feature across this year’s lift installations, not just at Alta.
sure but in the days after opening the brand new shiny six pack had a 30 minute wait time at least and multiple stops throughout the day. Its a beginner lift through and through so that will never change.
New lifts often have some teething issues, so I wouldn’t worry about downtime in the long run. As for beginners, Albion is a really bad option: no restraint bars, being a narrow double makes group lessons challenging, and its long ride-time isn’t great for impatient young kids.
Sunnyside 6 has a capacity of 2800 pph whereas Sunnyside 3 and Albion combine for 2800 pph. Alta is choosing 30 minute waits over crowded slopes (which is very on brand for them). If/when Grizzly Gulch gets built, Albion Base will have a second out-of-base lift.

An avalanche took out the Kumme detachable triple chair in 2019. Newly rebuilt as two section gondola.

Why aren’t there bars on the first few picture and then bars came?

Very true. Recently, they replaced the Brooks and Daisy lifts at Stevens Pass, so I experienced this firsthand.

This actually has the triple guage towers (if you look closely the quads are wider) so the terminals are weird.

I feel like they require too many customized parts. It’s easier to just build a high speed quad or six pack with wider chair spacing.
