Three years later but still germaine. At the time Peter took these photos, the lift was closed for the season as he mentioned. Manufacturer’s manuals direct us to remove surface lift carriers and store them out of the weather for the summer, so that’s what my counterparts had done here.
I think that West Bowl never spun again after these photos were taken due to pandemic staff shortages. Will be beyond awesome to be able to lap this area while being whisked up on a detach in the future.
I asked Sun Peaks this question a few weeks ago and here’s what they said: “Information on the status of the West Bowl area is in progress and we’ll have an update for guests later this fall.”
Paul Mathews, age isn’t the cause for replacing a lift, as long as they get well maintained. There are many older lifts than this 1978 that are still operating and are in good conditions.
The Hall cross arms were made to bolt together like that. They were done like that probably to utilize spring boxes instead of the Hall extendable tubular carriers that were originally on the lift.
The drive terminal appears to have been converted to hydraulic drive instead of electric.
Sad to see it go.
Its neat to see and ride lifts that are adapted, modified and repurposed over the years.
Im sure the insurance underwriters have a different opinion on that though.
Yes. I like repurposed old lifts. Riblets and Halls. They built the ski industry of North America. It is sad that they are being taken out and replaced.
why were the carriers removed?

I took these photos at the very end of the season. West Bowl had already operated its last scheduled day.

Sounds like they are committed to some sort of replacement in the future.

West Bowl is simply being closed this season due to a lack of staffing.

Was it once a J-bar? I’ve only seen those crossarms on Hall J-bars.

There’s a part of me that could imagine a triple or fixed grip quad running here.

They should have kept the old Crystal triple for this location instead of scrapping it…

I agree. There was no need to scrap the Crystal triple. In fact, they never even had to remove it!

The old Crystal Chair was too old. 1978.
