This Poma double came from Nub’s Nob ski area.Unloading area up top.Upper part of the lift line.Looking up the line. The first few towers.Tower 3.Drive station and loading area.Lift overview.
Ok this is the second lift installed at Nubs in ‘59 or ‘60.
There’s a real intriguing history of Larry Jump, Jean Pomagalski, Carlivaro Savio, and Telecar and PomaTelecar AND Miner Denver( Otsego club)
This lift was installed at Mount Holiday in 1990 based on its MI license number. That would make sense, since the new Yellow (Riblet triple) was installed in 1989 at Nubs Nob.
The Mt. Holiday manager informed me that this lift killed 3 people in a rollback when it was at Nubs Nob. I have never heard anything about that or if there is any truth to it. Has anyone heard anything about that?
The lift is supposed to be painted orange and be back up and running regularly as of July 2023 for the upcoming winter!
Never knew if it was the original yellow chair or if it was the other original Poma double that was removed in 1978 when the Green was built. Either way it was 61 years ago. From what I’ve heard third person, that incident in particular led to the design of redundant safety brake systems that supposedly weren’t initially designed on lifts of that era in the event of a driveshaft failure.
My father, grandfather and one of my aunts were some of the 55 people riding the lift when it suffered that deadly rollback. I believe it was actually the red lift up Smokey (later replaced by the green quad) and not this yellow lift which had the mechanical failure. Their chairs were at the bottom 1/4 of the line and they were all able to jump off during the rollback, and thankfully none of them were badly injured.
This is definitely Poma’s oldest lift. Stadeli’s oldest lift is 7A at Taos (used to be Lift 1). Partek’s is Cricket at Jiminy Peak. Riblet’s was the original Magic Mile
Who built the chairs on this lift? They don’t look like any Poma design I’m aware of.

They might be St. Lawrence.

The backrest and the grips are noticeably different. The grips look like any other Poma grip from that era.

This lift is almost never open. I go to Holiday on weekends most of the time and it’s still just blue and the two bunny hill rope tows.

As far as I know it’s a Poma Telecar

That would make sense. Look at the sheaves. They resemble Carlevaro Savio sheaves, which, when mounted on Poma towers, may indicate a Poma-Telecar.

There was a lift rollback incident that killed someone at Nubs but that is in January 1962. I have only seen some old digitized newspaper articles of such.

Is that why Yellow was fitted with a homemade backstop raised and lowered by a mechanical governor?
