Why is Sundance choosing to replace Flathead with a HSQ and not replacing Red’s with a HSQ and moving the current Red’s lift to Flathead? Red’s serves practically the entire upper mountain while Flathead only serves some black runs. Does it have to do with cost?
LikeLiked by 1 person
I wonder if Sundance is planning on extending Flathead to the top of Red’s making the entire upper mountain able to be lapped via one lift.
LikeLiked by 1 person
They apparently want to make a big expansion served by one HSQ. It will include the Flathead Zone.
LikeLike
Correct. The plan previously reported by Lift Blog called for moving the base of Flathead down next to the new Wildwood lift, extending the vertical in that pod by about 300 ft and expanding the skiable acreage further down the ridge on Bishop’s Bowl.

Where can I find the plan for the new HSQ? Still a bit confused on where the liftline will be.
LikeLike
Turns out I was incorrect. Based on the just published Friday News Roundup, it appears as though the new line for Flathead will run from the base of Wildwood all the way up to the current summit offloading next to Red’s.
This now makes it more clear why they are investing in a HSQ for this line instead of putting one in on the Red’s line – Flathead will now be running on a significantly longer line than Red’s and will likely become one of the premier expert pods in Utah with almost 2000′ vertical on a single line. I really like how this now segments the backside between Wildwood (700′ vert of beginner/low intermediate), Red’s (1300′ vert intermediate/advanced cruising) and the new Flathead (2000′ vert of advanced/expert terrain) to meet different needs.
New owners making a huge impact on the skiing experience with Outlaw, Wildwood and now Flathead – an absolute home run on every key on-mountain decision thus far.

RIP Northside, I honestly thought that it would get replaced by a six-pack, a D-Line perhaps, given the popularity of the Northside area. Lines would be a few minutes more there than the other lifts in Flagstaff (other than Ruby) Any idea why DV chose to replace this lift with another HSQ? Reliability?

I would say it is because of the top terminal location. The top of flagstaff is a very very busy spot. I can’t imagine that many more up there. It is also the oldest detach on the mountain which doesn’t help either. I will say I wonder if it will have a slight capacity boost, lines on that lift can get rather long.
LikeLike
Idk if its the lifts age or what, but the only thing I can picture it needing is a capacity bump. That terrain is super busy, unfortunately without some management up there I cant imagine that working out. Could also be that with the new expansion getting upscale lifts they are trying to update their most popular base areas to bubble lifts with seat heat.

A Leitner 6-Pack replacement for Glacier Express. (Probably imported from Europe)
2 High Speed Quads, Meadowlark and Eagle Chair. (No idea where those will go)
And also 2 T-Bars. One Called Temple lift and the other called Prunepicker’s Hill.
If anyone knows more about these projects, I’d be interested to know.

I wouldn’t see Glacier being replaced soon, it’s not that old and has enough capacity.
Meadowlark and Eagle are planned to replace the gondola, but it would be better if they did an 8-MDG on existing alignment and Eagle HSQ.
Prunepicker would serve as a connector, Temple serving abandoned beginner trails above the lodge.

For what it’s worth, Lake Louise’s interactive map shows a longer Richardson’s Ridge chair starting near Temple now (effectively where Prunepicker is shown starting) and crossing over the Ptarmigan run.

It still appears that it starts slightly higher than the lodge. Also, the interactive map might be dated as it does not show some run changes such as new flight chutes or Sunset Terrace as a green. The trail map shows the starting point right where Ptarmigan run meets Pika.

You want to be cautious with info from that website. They will typically add future lifts while they are still in the proposal stage. It’s not incorrect, but a project can take a long time to go from a proposal to a reality. My local ski area has a lift that has been on the MDP for 20+ years and was marked on a map as a future expansion at one point. 6 lifts and 4 lodges later, it still hasn’t happened.

Earlier this year I read an article about adding a lift in Wolf/DMI area. Maybe that’s where?
DMI and Wolf Creek are popular sidecountry areas at the resort and have been for many years. While the locals would likely prefer this area remain a “secret,” it will soon be open to everyone as Powder Mountain develops its plan to install at least one lift (possibly more) to make it accessible for everyone.

The Wolf lift is already scheduled to be a fixed quad from Skytrack this summer. Another lift serving this zone would work too though.

This is correct. DMI/Wolf Creek will be starting top and bottom stations along with tower foundations this summer. Don’t know if entire lift will be completed and ready for 2025/2026 season though. Concurrently, the Davenport Express will be going in this summer for the 2025/2026 season operations. The 2026 summer lift build could be the Half Pint chair or anyone of the following chairs as noted in their 2024 Cache County Master Plan (Pages 52-53) linked below. I won’t mention the other lifts proposed in their Weber County (mountain straddles two adjoining counties) Master Plan as there are over 12 new lifts proposed in total.

I haven’t been to Steamboat in a few years, but wouldn’t it make more sense to replace Sundown before Sunshine with a 6 pack? Sundown is older, more centrally located, doesn’t have a backup anymore, and I remember it having a huge line. Is there a mechanical reason to do Sunshine first (i.e. Sundown recently got upgrades)?
LikeLike
Mechanical reason, unsure. From what I understand, the logic is more that Sunshine accesses a ton of lower-level cruisers, so it gets busy more consistently and for longer than Sundown.

Since Wild Blue was installed, Sunshine has typically had longer lines than Sundown. Plus, the Sunshine area is projected to get even busier once Sunshine II is installed in a few years.

@coloradoskilifts – I think it was mentioned up thread, but traffic patterns at Steamboat have really changed since installation of Wild Blue. With one ride access to Sunshine from the base, that pod now gets crowded very quickly b/c it’s no longer 2 lifts and a crowded intermediate collector run to get there. Sundown no long needs to be the 2nd lift in the chain for the vast body of beginner/intermediate skiers trying to get over to Sunshine.

What does direct drive mean?
LikeLike
Direct drives are DC motors directly coupled to the bullwheel, as opposed to the traditional AC motor connected to the bullwheel through a drive shaft and gearbox. It is a much cleaner and quieter setup. Unfortunately, at least for LPA, they are only available for 6-packs and larger lifts.
LikeLike
All lifts, both Doppelmayr and LPA, can only put direct drives on 6-packs or larger lifts. They are simply too big to put on HSQs or smaller lifts.

Both LPA and Doppelmayr direct drives are AC permanent magnet synchronous motors.

Indeed, I stand corrected – had them backwards. The older lifts are generally DC drives
LikeLike
Here is a simpler explanation:
A direct drive is a drive directly linked to the bullwheel instead of there being a gearbox. It works like ceiling fan, only more complicated and on a larger scale. It is much quieter and easier to maintain, which is why many resorts are going with them.

I guess Hail peak & Vulcan for Deer valley summer 2026.

Sounds like just Hail Peak Express #10 at Deer Valley next summer. The lower part of Lift 6 going in this summer is now going to be called Vulcan Express #6A.
LikeLiked by 1 person
What was the Vulcan name originally going to be used for? I remember that on one of the early maps.
Probably makes sense for them to slow down and see where the bottlenecks are as they integrate all the new terrain and finish building more of the lodging that will fill it up. For example, do they need a better way back from the new terrain to the top of Bald Mountain rather than funneling everyone onto Ontario, which is narrow and full of beginners? Sultan was a huge bottleneck right now but should be fine once the new gondola opens, and more people will go lap Galena right below it when it gets backed up. Does the Crown Point replacement go to the front of the line or stay back burner with the gondola in place? How about the better way from Hail Peak to the rest of the new terrain, since Hail Peak is the only lift directly out of the new parking lot? I’m also surprised that Hail Peak wasn’t prioritized over Vulcan, since that is the way out of the new parking lot without shuttles and Vulcan can be closed separately from Revelator early/late season in bad snow years.
I’d like to see them circle back and start doing some of the upgrades on the existing terrain next before the infill lifts on the new terrain, like Northside and Quincy (right next to each other so probably makes sense to do them the same year). Same goes for Mayflower (40+ years old now with Yan aluminum sheaves) and the new lift up to the gondola midstation on Big Dutch Peak, which are close together and will probably happen the same year. The South Peak expansion doesn’t need to be right away – something to save for a relocated lift like Sterling when it gets 6-pack treatment since that area is at the end of the earth and won’t operate too many hours.
Whatever they do, DV is running circles around PCMR next door right now, which Vail seems happy to leave to rot in place
LikeLike
Vulcan was originally assigned to Lift 9, the second Hail Peak lift closer to Big Dutch. The name shuffling really shows how Deer Valley selected a bunch of old mining claim names and is using them basically at random. Not necesssarily choosing names that match where the lift is geographically.

Any confirmation that Holiday Mountain’s Bowl Lift is going to be a quad? From their Facebook page and Instagram, I was under the impression that they were reinstalling the old Turkey Trot double, or at least reusing the towers. Unless 1970s Poma towers were incredibly overbuilt, I would find it surprising that they would reuse towers from a lift that old for a quad. Could it be that they are simply reinstalling the old Turkey Trot with minor modifications? Possibly reusing leftover towers and chairs from the lift they installed last summer?

Porcupine already?! That will make Snowbasin the first resort in Utah with no fixed-grip lifts (other than the Allen Peak Tram which is fixed to the rope, plus a rope tow or 2) Unless Snowbasin decides to stick to the trend of replacing/building a lift every other year like with Becker this summer, DeMoisy in 2023, and Middle Bowl in 2021, then it would be 2027 unless Snowbasin really sticks to next summer.

lol sometimes it makes me wonder if they just don’t give a dam about the mineral issue. Kind of crazy but that leaves only two center poles in the cottonwoods both being in little cottonwood. I’d rather have good ole chickadee than a new one. But I’m also a bit biased.
I feel it might be faster to take baldy up to the Alta bird connect and traverse over to keyhole. To drop back in the front of the bird. On certain days.
LikeLike
From what I view and as a local to Snowbird at heart, Mid Gad will be tricky and maybe expensive to get a replacement since more than enough people utilize the mid-station as another beginner area in lower Gad Valley. Mid-Gad also provides more direct access to the Mid-Gad restaurant as well although you can take Gadzoom, but requires a run down. From what I hear, detachable mid stations are expensive although they can go for a half mid-station similar to what Sundance did with Outlaw to mitigate some added cost.
Baby Thunder used to be almost be empty, but now is one of the branded beginner areas at the frontside of the Bird and also as an egress from some expert lines off Gad 2 which drop into the zone. Baby Thunder also doesn’t run the best speed either, often running 300-400 fpm daily with closer-than-normal chair spacing.
Chickadee may be over 50 years old but has been running extremely high hours not just winter but for night skiing and in summer as well so a lifecycle upgrade is a bit welcoming.
If Mineral needs to be reliable and Snowbird isn’t planning an infill lift at the basin, a D-Line Replacement should be warranted for those circumstances and also why it’s my personal request. Aren’t they still planning on extending Mineral Down another 2,000-3,000 feet?

I’m thinking it will be the old Elk Camp lift from Snowmass that was removed this summer. It is being relocated to another Colorado resort and the lengths are pretty similar.
LikeLike
According to some inside sources who work at the resort, Powderhorn wants to instead buy an entirely new lift rather than a used one. The Flattop Flyer was itself is a mixed blessing when it was relocated from Marble Mountain NL. Apparently there were quite a bit of maintenance issues from the re-install process, so most likely they’d prefer to go for an all new lift for the West End. We know now that there an official proposal of a detach upgrade for West End, although that timeline is still uncertain currently.
One other mountain that could certainly use the old Elk Camp detach could be Ski Cooper, as the G.M has stated online that they are looking for one, and Cooper is also located pretty close to Snowmass. Despite a high-speed detach not being in the master plan, I am still optimistic that Cooper would want a detachable to service their front side terrain.

Hail Peak’s base, and the East Village parking lot, can be accessed from Big Dutch Peak (and Bald Mountain and Park Peak) via Tug of War and Magnolia, so no second lift will be constructed for access.
The Big Dutch Peak infill lift will be built at some point in the next few years just to make that terrain more lappable, as it will be quite difficult to do so with the current setup. Deer Valley is being conservative and seeing how quickly the new terrain is utilized before justifying the need for an infill lift.

Looking at it now versus last year, Hailstone would provide a funnel for skiers coming from Hail Peak to the Vulcan/Revelator area via the Joker trail especially in the cases of the Gondola or other areas getting backed up. It could also be a 2-way lift if skiers want an alternative going up to Hail Peak from the Sure Thing Run rather than ski down to the base.
When all lifts are completed, there are at least 5 ways from East Village to the Rest of the Mountain will be as follows:
