This lift appears to be the lift that the sky ride in the game planet coaster is based off of. Albeit the way the lift functions is far from accurate but the drive return and towers in that game are identical
I saw this lift being built in the Von Roll (former Hall) factory in Watertown, New York. We stopped in on a family vacation, looking for the Hall factory, we didn’t know about the sale of Hall to Von Roll until we got to the factory. The crew were really nice and seemed flattered they had visitors. They explained about the Disney project and let us watch a couple of the chairs of this lift get assembled. The factory yard had test footings and supports in place for trial overhead drive stations (think drive station at Silver Mountain, ID) along with several pieces of older Halls. They would not let us see the drive for this lift. Overall, awesome experience!
Did you go on any of the slides this lift services?

I’m pretty sure he had to, there’s no downloading on this lift.

I wonder if the cabin is ever removed when it is not needed.

It’s not.

Is this considered a chondola since there are both chairs and gondola cabins?

Probably not, since there is only one gondola cabin, and they’ll only let you ride it if you’re in a wheelchair.
