Originally this lift was named Betsy. It’s name was changed around the same time when they replaced Victoria Station and Blossom lifts and named the new lifts Molly’s Run and Stormin Norman.
Why is this lift even here? It only has 46 vertical feet! Timberline lodge should have put a surface lift here. Also, is there any tensioning on this lift?
For children’s lessons there has been a carpet lift since about 2002, but it is not open for general use. This chair is great for novices and beginners to learn how to load and unload from a chairlift and ride a non-intimidating slope.
At Ski Santa Fe, the way they teach people to get on and off is standstill. The main reason I say this is because they used a tower from a platter they once had, and put a Riblet chair on it
There is tensioning, at the top. The hydraulic ram is hidden between the terminal c-channels, and the pump is on the mast (it appears- might be just the accumulator).
It is an extremely user-friendly lift. It helps ski and boarding teachers instruct using a lift especially to the novice skiers which are attracted to this area. Furthermore, it helps students learn the skills they need for the other lifts at Timberline.
Bruno’s (chairlift) is no longer listed on the resort’s conditions page. In its place, it now says, “Bruno’s Handle Tow”… with “coming soon” as the status.
This chairlift went out-of-service before last winter’s season concluded. Here is the message Timberline posted on its Facebook page, on March 8, 2024: “Due to a gear box failure, Bruno’s chair is closed for the season. Unfortunately, the issue cannot be fixed quickly. Repairs will be made this summer and it will be ready to run in the fall. The Timberline Timber Tiger conveyor, plus all Summit Pass has to offer, will continue to service ski and snowboard lessons and our beginner guests. We are sorry for a little shorter season on Bruno’s.”
The lift is still in-place, visible from “Bruno’s” webcam on the conditions page. It will be interesting to see if Timberline announces a permanent retirement of the short chairlift, or if a fix is still in the works. It’s projected to be replaced by carpets in the resort’s Master Plan. In the interim, it seems a handle tow is “coming soon”.
I received a promotions email from Timberline this afternoon that had a section about Beginner Terrain that stated:
“BEGINNER TERRAIN
Bruno’s lift is temporarily out of service as we await a repair part. However, Bruno’s Run is fully groomed with a handle tow as an interim solution. The Timber Tiger conveyor (pictured here) is scheduled to operate starting Saturday. Summit Pass is also opening soon!”
The replacement gear box is set to arrive in early February. Then they’ll have to put the chairs back on. Should be up and running before March as long as everything goes as planned.
Bruno is listed back up on the lift status page. I talked to one of the Lift Maintenance people late in the season to see what was going on with the lift. They said it took a lot longer then they thought to get the gearbox rebuilt and were still waiting for it to come back. That was late April or early May. Glad to see the chairs back on the line and the lift listed again. I am wonder what the plans are for its future as a lot has happened since they planned on replacing it with magic carpets. They bought Summit and now put money into the lift by replacing the gearbox instead of retiring the lift.

I agree. They basically built a hill for the top station to go on. That’s 40 of the 46 vertical feet!

Carpet lifts were not around when this lift was installed and Timberline is planning on replacing this lift with a carpet in near future.
