According to skimaps.org this is the orignal gad 1. Because the 1978 map shows gad 1 with a mid station and only goes to the top to mid gad lodge. I think they just renamed this lift to mid gad then added the second gad 1 lift (Where the gadzoom high speed quad runs right now.) Then the newer gad 1 got replaced by gadzoom and mid gad got a new drive terminal. The mid gad lift currently was built in 1971 and the old gad 1 was built in 1980s.
I think you are right. There seems to be an extra lift listed in the 1980 Lift Construction Survey when it appears only Little Cloud and Gad 1 were added. http://www.skilifts.org/old/install_na1980.htm
I was told on a skilifts.org forum a few years ago that they extended Gad 1 to the current location and added this to replace it. I’d give you more detail, but I can’t find it right now. I know these aren’t the original Mid Gad chairs also, there are pictures of 80s style Dopp chairs floating around somewhere.
You can also see on the 1978 map that Gad 1’s top terminal was west of the Mid Gad lodge, where Gadzoom is now, but Mid Gad’s top terminal is East of the lodge. Snowbird faces North for reference.
I think you are somewhat right. The old gad 1 did start by the creekside lodge then went to the west side of Mid-gad lodge. They either extended gad 1 to little cloud and added mid gad as a brand new chairlift. Or they relocated the first gad 1 to where mid gad is now and renamed it to mid gad and added the new gad 1 as a brand new lift to the bottom of little cloud.
Mid-Gad was added and Gad 1 was extended in the same year. After extending Gad 1, they did have a midway station that let you off by the lodge but seems it was only used in high snow years as it could be adjusted. You can see the MId-Gad lift in the movie Better Off Dead as this was filmed at Snowbird around 1985.

Also do you know why gad 2 was apparently unavailable to snowboarders around 1994? https://skimap.org/data/226/7/1228452469.jpg
