Interestingly, the last two towers of the original South Chair that this lift replaced remain near the top of the mountain, with the haul rope and chairs intact. I believe it was the first Charilift in Ontario.
Yeah, they are still there, but their current location is not in their original alignment. Pretty sure the original chair this replaced has it’s lift line still visible from the top near the beavertails hut.
There were a total of 4 chairlifts that serviced the South zone of the mountain. This includes the old South Double, which Matthew was referencing, the O-Hill Chair, Big Baby Triple (ran to the top of Waterfall trail) and the current Southern Comfort Express. You are referring to the O-Hill Chair, which ran up the right side of cruiser and through the small gorge up to the location of the Beavertail hut. Matthew is referring to the Old South Chair, which began near the bottom of Dr. Doug at the operations chair, and ended were the two towers still stand. The line is roughly visible from the top of Dr. Doug when it drops left from Cruiser.
Both of these chairlifts did operate at the same time at one point, but the old South Double is much older. Both chairs were retired around the same time when the Southern Comfort was built.
