The lift was also bottom drive at Ascutney, so the bottom terminal at Crotched would not have been the top terminal at Ascutney.

What was the reason for switching the top and bottom terminals?

They didn’t, if you look at pics of this lift when it was at Ascutney, it was bottom drive/top return as well.
