This Doppelmayr Alpenstar quad anchors a new expansion on Loon’s South Peak. The lift services beginner and intermediate terrain as well as the Escape Route parking lots.Drive station with loading conveyor.Arriving at the top station.Upper lift overview.Simple return station.View from the summit. The final tower with anemometer.Upper half of the lift line.Lower lift line.Tower 1.Tower 2.Combo assemblies on tower 4.Riding up the lift line.View back down toward the town of Lincoln.Nearing the summit.More combination assemblies on tower 11.Most of the line is quite flat.Unloading area.View down the line near tower 7.View up at tower 4.Chairkit loading conveyor.
Layout of this trail pod looks kind of odd, but it’s nice to see Loon terrain be a little quirky for a change. Should be a nice addition for beginner groups, sort of fills a surprising gap in Loon’s offerings.
Will be very interesting to see if/how South Peak finally gets built out. Can’t believe the steam train still hasn’t been extended over here!
Boyne/Loon did a really great job with this lift and the associated trail pod. Loon’s beginner experience went from fairly poor to quite good, and the marketing team effectively communicated the addition so people are actually using it.
There are only 2 oddities with the complex:
1) The top of the lift ends just below Chipper (formerly the top of Escape Route), which makes one of the beginner trails strangely inaccessible from the lift.
2) It is tough with the mountain’s topography, but they need a green trail from the top of South Peak to the Timbertown pod. It is the only missing link preventing beginners from going back and forth from the main base (the bottom part of Cruiser is mellow enough where it can likely be re-designated as a green) without necessitating a bus shuttle ride. I am sure they will eventually build a learning center and lodge at Timbertown, but the main base will always be the primary hub.
i’d like to imagine they will somehow try to add some green trail to get down to that pod. they are also cutting undercut and adding snowmaking, but its supposed to be repurposed as a blue, so that won’t help too much. it also seems like a big long way to get from escape route parking lot to, lets say gondola. you gotta go up timbertown, down lower cruiser, up LEQ, over tote road, then choices from there. maybe this is how it is other places, i dont know. just seems weird.
Worst lift here by far. Sometimes the gates don’t open so they have to constantly slow down or stop the lift. Get a great view of the town of Lincoln. Lift has a gnarly paint job. BEGINNERS You will be vibing here all day long!!

So far they only seem to be operating this pod Friday through Sunday.
