The Sandia Peak Tramway was the longest in the world when it opened in 1966 and held that title until 2010.There have been three sets of cabins, the most recent of which were fabricated by CWA.One of only a few Bell tramways in the Americas. The bottom terminal south side track ropes and rescue rope.Cabins pass just above tower 2.There are two large spans on this lift and only two towers over more than 14,000 feet. The biggest span is between tower 2 and top terminal, where cabins reach more than 1,000 feet above ground. The blue cabin approaches the top dock.Top station with counterweights below.Saddles and bullwheels up top.Cars hold up to 45 passengers or 10,000 lbs.Another view of the new blue cabin. There is a new waiting room building at the top dock. Both cars and tower 2.The red cabin.Leaving the top terminal. In the biggest span.A view from tower 2 up.T2.The span between the two towers.Very tall tower 1. Initially there were plans for a third tower but this one was made taller instead.New CWA cabin still with manual doors.Bullwheels at the drive station.Side view into the motor room.Tram overview. The two towers and red cabin.Cabin, hanger and carriage.A road crosses in front of the bottom terminal and has a tram crossing warning light.
After the mishap yesterday and the incident in August 2020, perhaps it is time to replace this 57-year-old lift. With 250,000 annual riders, a 3S could make sense given the profile.
Does the line gauge change from bottom to top?

It actually happened in August 2019. The tram stalled for about 8 minutes in the big span. I was on the tram during the incident. It was terrifying

Naah she’s good for another 20 or so years. Ice can do this to any modern lift.

Here are 2 things I like about the tram:
1: The old 1986 cabins
2: the drive bullwheels seen at the very bottom of picture 23
