Chair Falls at Heavenly, Lift Evacuated

According to published reports, an unoccupied chair fell from the light side of Heavenly’s North Bowl triple just before 11:00 am today.  As a result, approximately 65 people were evacuated from the lift in about two hours.  The incident is under investigation.  North Bowl is a 1984 Riblet triple with insert clips.  The video below shows a skier being lowered by rope and North Bowl will remain closed until further notice.

That chair and Boulder need to be replaced with a single new lift equipped with a mid-station for beginner offload.

Riblet “clip ejections” happen with some regularity often as a result of wind or riders causing chairs to hit towers.

    March 2008 Drumheller Valley
    March 2008 Summit at Snoqualmie
    July 2010 Thredbo
    December 2010 Mt. Ashland – wind-related
November 2011 Mt. Baker – damaged pin
    December 2011 Red Lodge – wind-related
    February 2012 Boyne Highlands
    February 2012 Coffee Mill
    January 2016 Heavenly

Keep in mind Riblet built over 500 lifts with insert clips. At least 300 of them still operate with somewhere around 36,000 clips still in use.
