Sea to Sky Gondola Posts a Recovery Update

A month after someone brazenly sabotaged the Sea to Sky Gondola by cutting its haul rope, cleanup is nearly complete with a rebuilding plan in place.  “After a massive effort by our incredible operations team, and partners at Rocky Mountain Lift Services, Doppelmayr and Black Tusk Helicopters, we have removed all of the cabins, pieces of the damaged cable, and have secured the main cable,” the company wrote on Facebook this morning. “Thanks to our friends at Whistler Blackcomb, Inter-Mtn Testing and Windfirm Tree Services for their assistance in making this happen.”  A remarkable video of the process shows cabins being carefully extracted from the lift line and surrounding forest before being flown to the gondola’s parking lot.

Delivery of a new haul rope from Europe is expected next month and an order of new cabins will follow.  Work continues under the gondola and upper mountain hiking trails remain closed for now.

The gondola base area including Basecamp Cafe, guest services and retail store reopened last week along with a trail to Shannon Falls and the Stawamus Chief.  “We are still anticipating an early spring 2020 reopening and would like to thank everyone for their patience and support,” says the Sea to Sky team.

Does this mean they’re gonna have to upgrade to Omega Vs? I would assume they’d be reusing the old cabins given many are in decent condition if they were gonna be doing Omega IVs.

I emailed them about what they are doing with the cabins and they said a whole new line would be purchased and the old ones would be re-purposed around the Sea to Sky area. I assume some will become photo booths at the top, but I don’t think they’ll use all 20. I do think they should invest in cabin parking building at the base to protect the new cabins.

Omega V’s would be awesome. Aren’t they only used on D-Line?

They’d be pretty foolish to not add in some form of parking, though with the base area mainly occupied by all of the “base camp” attractions I’m not really sure how they’d do that, and parking cabins every night can be a bit of a hassle. I guess if the alternative is having to replace all the cabins again then I suppose they’d probably be pretty willing to take that opportunity should it come up.

I would assume this is an insurance claim for them, so they would likely try to get all new cabins as part of the claim.

Me and my friends where joking that the person who cut the lift was whistler. Whistler is S2S’s main competition and we are referencing war between Grouse and Hollyburn. Back in the 50s Hollyburn (Cypress) was operating a single chair and grouse was operating a double chair. Now grouse didnt like this competition, and sent a group of insurance workers to Blow Up and Set Fire to the chairlift due to unpaid expenses. Grouse somehow one a later battle in court which then the money was used to build the Skyride.

    Thats how modfia Works.

I’d seriously doubt that. Sea to Sky is just like a small attraction on the way to Whistler with a couple similar hikes and a gondola that takes you to the top. I really don’t think Whistler thinks of them as much of a competitor, especially given that biking, which is Whistler’s main summer attraction, isn’t offered at Sea to Sky. Seems even odder considering Whistler came and helped out with the Sea to Sky cleanup after the crash. Fun point about Grouse though.

Pretty damn stupid to make up dumb stuff like this and post it on the internet. Fine to joke with your friends verbally. when you see them but posting comments like this is just dumb. grow up.
