In addition to 17,000 early layoffs of seasonal employees, Alterra Mountain Company has made the difficult decision to furlough many of its year-round workers and defer capital projects. Affected workers will remain employed with benefits such as health insurance but will not receive any pay for the foreseeable future. CEO Rusty Gregory will forego his entire salary as long as full time employees are furloughed. Employees in key roles who continue to work will receive full salaries for now. “While it is my fervent intent to avoid reducing anyone’s full pay rate for work going forward, we do not know how long this crisis will continue,” said Gregory in a letter to employees. “It is imperative that we ensure that our finite resources last long enough to get us to the other side of this pandemic and fully open for operation when the time comes.”
More than 50 percent of planned capital spending will be cut. In a sign of just how fast the coronavirus changed everything, Alterra announced $223 million worth of improvements just four days before being forced to shut down all 15 of its resorts. Postponed Alterra lift projects are both located at Mammoth Mountain in California, where Doppelmayr was slated to replace the mountain’s two oldest high speed quads with six place models. The Broadway Express and Canyon Express were constructed in 1988 and 1994, respectively. Alterra also announced last month the purchase of a Doppelmayr high speed quad for Tremblant, Quebec to be installed in 2021. The future of that project will be determined at a later date.

First it was Vail Resorts, then Boyne, then Alterra. All of the lifts I was looking forward to in 2020 are now canceled, I was even planning to go to Okemo and Loon when their lifts opened, but I guess I’ll have to wait. Its a shame what coronavirus did to this world just in a month to the world & the skiing industry.

Yes, three out of the four majors, have canceled major infrastructure projects, does Powdr Corp have major infrastructure projects planned this year? This could take three or four years for the majors to catch up with the infrastructure delays.

Powdr had not announced any construction of any new lift projects for 2020-21 but Eldora and Lee Canyon both have approval for new lifts.

So both of Mammoth’s lift projects are postponed until 2021? Or are they yet to be rescheduled?

I’ve moved them to my 2021 list but that is unconfirmed. The statement Alterra gave to me just said they have been postponed.

Hopefully it only gets postponed for 1 year. This will make 10 years of no new lifts for Mammoth.

I think Copper is going to finish the new Solitude Station that was started last summer but I don’t think Powdr are planning anything else there.

That’s it. Standard maintenance only, otherwise. We’re planning upgrades to a couple of control systems and a gearbox replacement, but much of that will be done in-house.

So far by my count Doppelmayr has lost 6 complete lifts, Leitner-Poma hast lost 3 (plus a relocation) and Skytrac has lost 1.

Did Alterra cancel everything because it only lists the two six packs at mammoth and tremblant. It never listed things other than lifts to be cancelled. The mill was supposed to be expanded at mammoth wonder what will happen with that. Also wonder what will happen with steamboat expansion this summer since they are not building any new lifts there they just need to get trees cut down.
