Sun Peaks Plans West Bowl Detachable

An eighth Doppelmayr quad chairlift may soon join the Sun Peaks Resort lift fleet. The resort recently applied with the Province of British Columbia for right of way to build a mile long high speed quad in West Bowl, currently home to a disused T-Bar. Sun Peaks retired the West Bowl T-Bar in 2020, leaving the terrain hike-in only. The 1965 Hall was the last remaining non-Doppelmayr lift at Sun Peaks.

Now Sun Peaks plans a much longer detachable quad with an approximately 1,000 foot vertical rise. With a lower bottom terminal and higher top station, the West Bowl Express would significantly improve access to a large variety of underutilized terrain. The province is soliciting public comments on the project through June 24th. If approved, the new lift would be constructed in 2023 and 2024, opening for the 2024-25 ski season.

This will be one of those rare detachables only reachable via a fixed grip lift.

I’m not totally clear on the topography here, but it looks like this setup can effectively replace the upper half of the Burfield Chair. Perhaps now they’ll be able to replace just the bottom half.

Will take the load off of the Burfield chair. Isn’t clear how to back to main mt.? There should be consideration of that!
We love the bottom to top ride.

Looks like you will still need to follow the road below Sunnyside back to mid station.

I Haven’t been to sun peaks in 5 years. With the new west bowl going higher, wouldn’t you be able to take the road that is the gills hike back on to 5 mile? Joining just above rice bowl?

Yes, access back to the main mountain will probably be via this. They’ve already built a new road in that little Gil’s hike valley that is obviously made to be a downhill run from the future top terminal site back to 5 Mile.

Looks like it will top out where current weather station is? Above First Saddle?

Will be ready for 2024/2025. I am in sun peaks right now and was able to ask sources.
But also also be aware of sun peaks potential hosts for freestyle for a 2030 Olympics. Morrissey base area and various terrain would pivot from otherwise planned lift phases.

I wonder how much Sun Peaks regrets making Burfield a fixed grip rather than detachable.

Yeah, the old one. Tod Mountain was bought out by Sun Peaks in 1992, and Sun Peaks installed the chair that’s currently in place as the Burfield in 1997. It was certainly their decision to make it a fixed grip.
