I’ve had the privilege of skiing mt waterman only a few times but man when they open everyone comes out of the woodwork and rallies up the 2 for really fun SoCal skiing. Some snowmaking and badly needed upgrades to the chairs would go a long way to making it a viable, day-trippable area from LA. Summer operations are a no-brainer too, there is TONS of hiking and camping in that area that is swarmed by weekend warriors coming from LA, hoping they can capitalize on it!

What will the proposed chairlifts at Van Hoevenberg be used for?

Sounds like spectator people movers for the sliding track.

Love the blog, Peter! I’m a freelance writer up in Canada and thought you might enjoy a few photos of the new Grouse Mountain gondola that will be opening soon!

West Bowl was my introduction to tree skiing. It’s such a lovely area. At first I thought the only way out was up Burfield which would be a huge bottleneck buy looks like they extended 5 mile to connect as well so there is a quick way out when you are done. More detailed map at the link.

Wow, one more reason to hate Powder Mountain.

PowMow was at it’s prime when Woody would drop Powder Country skiers back off at the top of Hidden Lake
PowMow began to fade when they started to charge for Lightning Ridge rides
PowMow died after the 05/06 season when they installed Hidden Lake Express

I haven’t been to PowMow in over 20 years. How crowded has it gotten in years past? It wasn’t crowded back then like Snowbasin and the stuff in the canyons. In this day and age now many are willing to pay more $$$ to avoid crowded slopes. If a mountain can cash in on that then kudos to them. May suck for others though.

They are trying to do something that hasn’t been done. The Utah secret is out. People are coming to ski. Keeping a place relatively uncrowded without raising prices and/or making it private for only the richest people is tough. Making weekends only for pass holders is a good idea. I wish some of the other utah ski areas would prioritize their szn passholders over instead of the hoards of IKONers.

Is the garage for the detachable gondolas/chairs always at the bottom terminal?

The Eagle Bahn Gondola at Vail has a garage at each end. The bottom is more common because it tends to be closer to roads and less wind-prone, but it’s physically possible to put it at any station (including a midstation, if it exists).
