Anthony Lakes was sure to go in-depth about the nature of the detaching…
“The chairlift incident was caused by the result of an employee’s poor choice to horse around with another employee by giving the chair a “super bump”, which is not standard practice when loading guests on the chair. This caused the chair to swing and twist side to side and then caused the chair to hit the first tower, resulting in the chair twisting and detaching from the haul rope.”

What exactly is a “Super Bump”?

Not being present but being rather familiar with operations, the operator was trying to be funny. I imagine they were trying to give their fellow employee a big swing off the load board, which isn’t great practise on any lift but especially on a Riblet.

For context: I’ve torn down a 1962 Riblet double, and just the other day spoke with a fellow mechanic who helped remove a 1973. Both of us noted how difficult it is to remove a carrier and clip from the rope. The combination of factors necessary for this are rare.

Having taken down a 1972 SLI/Riblet hybrid, can also confirm that the clips are a right pain to remove without the proper equipment. The signs nobody reads saying do not swing or bounce chairs is there for a reason, especially or Riblet clipped lifts.

That design was manufactured in North America, then shipped to France. There was a French customer that wanted the North American lifts because they were less expensive that what POMA was supplying. I think LPOA sold 2
    or 3 this way.
